Judith Ellen Levy is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Prior to joining the court, Levy was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Michigan. In July of 2013, President Obama nominated Levy for a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.[1] She was confirmed on March 12, 2014 by the U.S. Senate on a vote of 97-0.[2]

On July 25, 2013, President Obama nominated Judith Ellen Levy to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan to fill the vacancy left by Nancy Edmunds.[1] Obama commented on the nomination, stating:

Levy was rated Unanimously Qualified by the American Bar Association.
Levy's nomination was returned by the Senate on January 3, 2014 and she was renominated on January 6th by President Obama.[5]
Levy's nomination was reported to the full Senate on January 16, 204 after a voice vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee.[6] On March 12, 2014, she was confirmed by the full Senate on a vote of 97-0.[2]

On November 10, 2021, Judge Levy , of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, approved a $626 million settlement to resolve thousands of cases brought before the court, as well as the Genesee County Circuit Court and Michigan Court of Claims, concerning lead contamination to Flint, Michigan's municipal water supply.[7]
According to the November 10 court order the settlement is, "one of the largest settlement's in the State's history."[8] In a 178-page opinion, Judge Levy set aside 79.5% of funds from the settlement for children and adolescents exposed to lead-contaminated water.[8]
The city's water became contaminated in 2014 when the city switched its supplier from Detroit's water supply to the Flint River. After the city detected E. Coli and other bacteria in the water, the city treated the supply by increasing the levels of chlorine. The chlorine caused the water to corrode the water pipes, resulting in lead contamination.[7]
