The city of Juneau utilizes a council-manager system. In this form of municipal government, an elected city council, which includes the mayor and serves as the city's primary legislative body, appoints an executive called a city manager to oversee day-to-day municipal operations and implement the city council's policy and legislative initiatives.[2][3]
Mayor
The mayor is a member of the city council. He or she presides over city council meetings and official city ceremonies. The mayor also represents the city on the state, national, and international levels. The mayor does not have veto powers.[4]
The current Mayor of Juneau is Beth Weldon (nonpartisan). Weldon assumed office in 2018.
City manager
The city manager is Juneau's chief executive officer. Appointed by the city council, the city manager's responsibilities include overseeing the city's day-to-day operations, planning and implementing the city's annual budget, carrying out council policies, and hiring most city government employees.[5]
City council
The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly is the city's primary legislative body. It is responsible for approving and adopting the city budget, levying taxes, and making or amending city laws, policies, and ordinances.[2]
The Assembly is made up of nine members, including the mayor. The mayor and two Assembly members are elected at large. The other six members are elected by the city's two districts. Each district is represented by three members to staggered three-year terms.

The city's budget process operates by fiscal years running from July 1 to June 30 of the next year. The city charter names the city manager as responsible for drafting the budget. The budget includes the City and Borough of Juneau operating budget, the Juneau School District general operating budget, capital improvement projects, and the property tax mill levy rate. From April to May, the Juneau Assembly Finance Committee reviews the proposed budget. The Assembly also holds hearings to allow for public input in the budget process. The Assembly will then adopt the budget and make amendments if they are needed.[6][7]
