Karen Salmon is the former Maryland superintendent of schools. The state board of education first appointed her to the position on May 24, 2016, and she assumed office on July 1. Salmon stepped down at the end of her term on June 30, 2021.[1]

In December 2019, Salmon announced that she would not seek a second term after her initial term end date of June 30, 2020.[2] Her contract was later extended to end on June 30, 2021, however, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.[3]

Biography

A native of Harford County, Salmon attended the University of Delaware for her undergraduate degree and earned a master's degree and a doctorate in special education from the University of Maryland College Park. She worked first as a special education teacher, then as a vocational coordinator at Caroline County Public Schools until assuming a position as an assistant principal. She then served as the coordinator of services for exceptional children at Talbot County schools, then eventually became the superintendent of the district in 2003. Prior to her appointment to the Department of Education, Salmon was the superintendent for the Bay Union Free School District in Bay Shore, New York.[4]

Salmon was appointed as Maryland superintendent of schools by the Maryland State Board of Education on May 24, 2016. She replaced former interim officeholder Jack R. Smith, who was appointed to the post in September 2015 following the resignation of former Superintendent Lillian Lowery.

The Maryland Superintendent of Schools is a position in the Maryland state government. The superintendent is selected by the State Board of Education for a renewable four-year term and serves as secretary-treasurer to the board. However, the superintendent does not have a vote on the board, as the other board members do.[5]
