There is one public school district in Hawaii, known as the Hawaii school district or the Hawaii Department of Education, which serves 184,760 students. That represents 0.7 percent of all students attending top enrollment districts in the United States. Established by Kamehameha III on October 15, 1840, it is the oldest school system west of the Mississippi River and the only system established by a sovereign monarch. The Hawaii State Department of Education is a single, statewide school district with 287 schools (254 regular, two special, 31 charter) plus 11 adult education schools on seven islands. The department employs about 13,000 teachers. The DOE formulates policy for the public schools and the Hawaii state library system.[1][2]
