Mark A. Barnett is the chief judge of the United States Court of International Trade. He joined the court in 2013 after a nomination from President Barack Obama. Barnett became chief judge on April 6, 2021.[1][2]

Biography

Education

Barnett attended Dickinson College, earning his B.A., magna cum laude, in 1985. He earned his J.D. in 1988 from the University of Michigan Law School.[3]

Barnett was nominated on July 12, 2012, by President Barack Obama to a seat on the United States Court of International Trade vacated by Judge Judith Barzilay.[1] Obama commented on the nomination, stating:

I am proud to nominate this outstanding candidate to serve on the United States Court of International Trade. Mr. Barnett has a long and distinguished record of service, and I am confident he will serve on the court with distinction.[3][4]

Barnett was rated "Majority Well Qualified," "Minority Qualified" by the American Bar Association. Barnett's nomination was returned to the president on January 3, 2013. The nomination was resubmitted on January 4, 2013.[5]

The United States Senate confirmed Barnett on May 23, 2013, with a voice vote.[5]
