Maryanne Trump Barry was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. She joined the court in 1999 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). She retired from the court on February 11, 2019.[1]

Early life and education

A native of New York, New York, Barry graduated from Mount Holyoke College with her bachelor's degree in 1958, from Columbia University with her master's degree in 1962, and from Hofstra University School of Law with her J.D. in 1974.[1]

Barry is the sister of President Donald Trump (R).[2]

Barry was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit by President Bill Clinton on June 17, 1999, to a seat vacated by Lee Sarokin, who assumed senior status. The American Bar Association rated Barry Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination.[4] Hearings on Barry's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on July 29, 1999, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) the same day. Barry was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on September 13, 1999, and she received her commission on September 22, 1999. Barry assumed senior status on June 30, 2011. She retired from the position on February 11, 2019.[1][5] She was succeeded in this position by Judge Patty Shwartz.

District of New Jersey

Barry was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey by President Ronald Reagan on September 14, 1983, to a seat vacated by Judge H. Curtis Meanor. Hearings on Barry's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 28, 1983, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on September 30, 1983. Barry was confirmed on a voice vote of the United States Senate on October 6, 1983, and she received her commission the next day. Barry resigned from the district court on October 25, 1999, upon her elevation to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.[1][6] Barry was succeeded in this position by Judge Joel Pisano.
