From Ballotpedia

Oklahoma held nonpartisan general elections for local judicial offices on November 6, 2018. A primary election took place on June 26, 2018, for those offices where more than two candidates filed to run. The candidate filing deadline was April 13, 2018. Any candidate who receives a majority of the votes in the primary election was automatically elected and the race did not appear on the general election ballot.[1][2]

Election rules

District court elections

Judges of the district courts run in nonpartisan elections after four-year terms. If two candidates are competing for one seat, their names will appear on the ballot for the general election. If more than two candidates file for one seat, they will compete in a primary election. If one candidate receives a majority of the votes in the primary, that candidate is elected and does not need to run in the general election. If no one receives a majority of the votes, the two candidates with the most votes will compete against each other in the general election.[3] Unopposed candidates do not appear on the ballot.[4]

Judicial selection method

District courts

See also: Nonpartisan election of judges

The 75 judges of the Oklahoma District Courts are chosen in nonpartisan elections. They serve four-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving.[5]

The chief judge of each district court is selected by vote of the other judges. He or she serves in that capacity for a one-year term.[5]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[5]

  • a qualified voter in his or her district for at least one year; and
  • licensed to practice for at least four years (or have four years of service as a judge of a court of record).
