Ray Kent is a federal magistrate judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan. He was appointed to this position on August 1, 2015, upon the retirement of Magistrate Hugh Brenneman, Jr. His current term will expire on July 31, 2031.[1][2]
Education
Kent attended Michigan State University for his undergraduate studies and Wayne State University for law school.[1]
Professional career
After law school, Kent was an associate with Sidley Austin in Chicago, Illinois. He later worked for Dykema Gossett law firm in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After 17 years in private practice, Kent was named the federal public defender for the Western District of Michigan. He served in that capacity from January 2005 to July 2015.[1][3][4]
Judicial career
Western District of Michigan
On August 1, 2015, Kent began his term as a federal magistrate judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan upon the recommendation of a merit selection panel and in accordance with 28 U.S.C. Section 631 and governing regulations for the selection of magistrates. He succeeded Magistrate Hugh Brenneman, Jr., who retired after 35 years on the bench. His current term will expire on July 31, 2031.[1]
