Sara Elizabeth Lioi is the chief judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. She joined the Court in 2007 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.
Lioi is also a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. She was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on May 19, 2023.[1]
Early life and education
Born in Canton, Ohio, Lioi graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1983 with her bachelor's degree and received a Juris Doctor degree from The Ohio State University Law School in 1987.[2]
Professional career
Lioi was a private practice attorney in Canton, Ohio from 1987 to 1997 before being elected to serve as Judge of the Stark County, Ohio Court of Common Pleas from 1997 to 2007.[2]
Judicial career
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (2023-present)
Lioi is a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. She was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on May 19, 2023.[1]
Northern District of Ohio
On the recommendation of Senator George Voinovich, Lioi was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio by President George W. Bush on January 9, 2007 to a seat vacated by Lesley Wells as Wells assumed senior status. Lioi was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 8, 2007 and received commission on March 14, 2007.[3]
