Education

Sherry Klein Heitler was a justice for the New York County Supreme Court, Civil Term (1st Judicial District). She became an acting justice of the supreme court in 1996 and was elected to the court in 2001. She was the administrative judge of civil matters in the 1st Judicial District from 2009 until her retirement in March 2015.[1][2]

Education

Heitler received her B.A. degree from Hunter College of the City of New York in 1965. The following year, she earned her M.A. degree from New York University. She then received her J.D. degree from Fordham University Law School in 1976.[1]

Career

Heitler began her career in 1977 as a law assistant for the New York City Civil Court. She then practiced as a partner of the private firm Heitler & Levy, P.C. from 1979 through 1993. She also taught as an adjunct professor of law at Baruch College (City University of New York) from 1981 to 1985.

Heitler's judicial career began in 1994, when she was elected judge of the New York City Civil Court. She held this position until her election to the New York County Supreme Court in 2001. During this time, however, she served as an acting justice of the supreme court from 1996 to 2000. She was appointed an associate justice of the appellate term in 2007 and was appointed the administrative judge of civil matters for the 1st Judicial District in 2009.[1]
