Stanley Brotman

Stanley Brotmann was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. He joined the court in 1975 after being nominated by President Gerald Ford. On August 29, 2013, Brotman presided over his last case and retired from the court after serving for 38 years.^[1] Brotman passed away on February 21, 2014 at the age of 89.^[2]

Early life and education

A New Jersey native, Brotmann graduated from Yale University with his bachelor's degree in 1947 and later graduated from Harvard Law School with his J.D. in 1950. Brotmann served in the US Army from 1942 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1952.^[3]

Profesional career

Brotmann spent his entire legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of New Jersey from 1952 to 1975.

Judicial career

District of New Jersey

Brotmann was nominated by President Gerald Ford on January 27, 1975 to a seat vacated by Mitchell Cohen as Cohen assumed senior status. Brotmann was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 13, 1975 on a senate vote and received commission on March 14, 1975. He assumed senior status on April 23, 1990. Brotman was succeeded in this position by William Bassler. Brotman retired from the court on August 29, 2013, after 38 years as federal judge.
