Stefan R. Underhill is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. He joined the court in 1999 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). Underhill served as chief judge of the court from 2018 to 2022.
Underhill assumed senior status on November 1, 2022.[1]
Biography
Early life and education
Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, Underhill graduated from University of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in 1978, from the University of Oxford with a second bachelor's degree in 1981, and from Yale Law School with his J.D. in 1984.[2]

Underhill was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut by President Bill Clinton on January 26, 1999, to a seat vacated by Peter Dorsey. The American Bar Association rated Underhill Substantial Majority Well Qualified, Minority Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Underhill's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 16, 1999, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on June 24, 1999. Underhill was confirmed on a recorded 94-4 vote of the U.S. Senate on June 30, 1999, and he received his commission on July 7, 1999. Underhill became chief judge of the district court in 2018.[2][3][4] Underhill assumed senior status on November 1, 2022.[1]
