The United States Circuit Court for the District of Louisiana was established on February 13, 1845. It was then abolished on March 3, 1849, with the division of Louisiana into Eastern and Western judicial districts. At that time, the Eastern district was given a corresponding Eastern circuit, and the Western district was granted its own appellate jurisdiction.

On July 27, 1866, Louisiana was united under one judicial district, and the Circuit Court for the District of Louisiana was reinstated. On March 3, 1881, Louisiana was again divided into Eastern and Western Districts, and corresponding Eastern and Western circuit courts were established.[1]
