William Mershon Lanning (1849-1912) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

Professional career

Judicial career

Third Circuit

Lanning received a recess appointment from President William Howard Taft on May 6, 1909 to fill a seat vacated by George Mifflin Dallas. He was confirmed by the Senate on May 18, 1909, and received commission that same day. He served until his death on February 16, 1912.[1]

District of New Jersey

Lanning received a recess appointment from President Theodore Roosevelt on June 1, 1904 to fill a seat vacated by Andrew Kirkpatrick. On December 6, 1904, he was nominated. He was confirmed by the Senate on December 13, 1904, and received commission that same day. He served on this court until May 24, 1909. Lanning was succeeded in this position by John Rellstab.
