The Fletchers then decide to postpone the wedding until Jackie gives birth, at which time, Herbert plans to adopt her child. After Bill tells him that he is going to be a father, however, Vern, who is still in love with Jackie, refuses to sign papers granting her full custody of the child. Jackie then reminds Vern that she divorced him for having an affair with writer Wanda York, and points out that he would never win a custody suit, even though he denies any romantic involvement with Wanda. Determined to get Jackie back, Vern then emphasizes his love of children and hires lawyer Otto Stacy to advise him. Realizing that Vern will insist on taking the case into court, Herbert's father, who is anxious to avoid a scandal, asks his son to convince Jackie to share custody with her ex-husband. When Otto suggests that Vern get married to show that he is serious about providing a home for his child, he proposes to Wanda. Soon after Vern announces his engagement, Jackie encounters Wanda's ex-husband, who reveals that since the divorce he has learned that Vern really did sleep in the hotel lobby as he claimed on the night he and Wanda were stranded by the weather. Then, Jackie goes for a check-up, and Bill informs her that she was falsely diagnosed as pregnant and can get married any time. Realizing that her suspicions of Vern were unfounded, Jackie is now sorry that she divorced him. Nonetheless, she resolves to go through with her marriage to Herbert. When Jackie learns that Herbert intended to persuade her to stay out of court, despite her wish for sole custody of her child, she decides to reconcile with Vern. Wanda, who still believes that Jackie is pregnant, encourages her to fight for sole custody, explaining that she does not like children. Seeing a way to end Wanda's engagement to Vern, Jackie insists that she is now willing to share custody. Later, during an engagement party, Jackie telephones Vern, pretending to have a craving for pickled lychee nuts. Vern leaves the party to bring them to her and, after a series of stratagems by Jackie, does not return until the party is over. Despite Wanda's angry response, Otto phones Jackie the next day to announce that Vern is getting married. Unwilling to give up, Jackie tells Wanda that she is going to have triplets. At first Wanda seems ready to break her engagement, but later, her suspicions roused by Jackie's request to keep the information secret, she visits Bill's office and learns that Jackie is not pregnant. After Wanda tells Vern about the "triplets," the couple visits the Fletchers to offer their congratulations. An irate Herbert breaks his engagement, which angers Vern. After Jackie leaves the Fletcher house, Bill, who knows that Jackie wants Vern back, sends him after her. While Wanda fixes her attentions on a willing Herbert, Vern catches Jackie, and she decides to tell him the truth after their wedding.
