Français : Statue de Zeus à Olympie
English: The statue of Zeus at Olympia is believed to have been the prototype of all subsequent representations of the supreme deity in similar temples throughout the Graeco-Roman world. Too large to have been solid, the statue was a composite of precious materials, reportedly chryselephantine, over a framework of ordinary materials, a formula that insured its rapid dismantling when the culture was no longer interested it maintaining it. Only verbal descriptions of such statues, artists' renditions of them, and smaller representatons have survived. They suggest a stock Zeus seated upon the throne of heaven under the vault of heaven with one hand raised to grasp the sceptre of power, and the other lowered to support a winged victory. The statue and the room were so embellished as to strike awe into the beholder.
