Please, if you think a category not listed, but still inherent to photography, do not remove it, rather than use a more specific subcategory. thank you very much. --Pava (talk) 10:20, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Fair enough, but after looking through the commons policy on categorisation, I have a question to ask. Why is this file not listed in Category:Wheels, or Category:Grass, or for that matter, Category:Bird's nests in backgrounds of photos taken in Italy? It seems a little inconsistent to put it in Category: Clouds in Italy and not in Category: Grass in Italy, after all, both the grass and clouds in this photo are equivalently relevant, certainly in terms of the space each feature takes up in the frame. Your subject here is a Fiat Punto, not clouds, or bird's nests, or wheels, or grass. Wouldn't you therefore categorise it as such? Or is there something I'm missing?Thennicke (talk) 12:06, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

[edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Picture of the Year 2013 Results

[edit]

The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear Thennicke,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.

Thanks,
the Picture of the Year committee

Please excuse me spamming you. As a regular on Feature Picture Candidatess you will recognise User:The Photographer, who has 86 Featured Pictures. His contributions cover the architecture and culture of Brazil and Venezuela. He has basic photographic equipment: an old D300 camera and 35mm lens, and lives in a poor country where photographic equipment is expensive. The Photographer has recently taken several images using the technique where multiple frames are stitched together to create a high-resolution panorama. However, many times frustrated with the stitching errors that result from trying to take such photos without a proper panoramic head for his tripod. This special equipment permits the camera to be rotated around the entrance pupil of the lens, and eliminates such errors. Having a panoramic head would greatly increase the potential for The Photographer to create sharp high-resolution images for Commons. In addition, the purchase of a fisheye lens would enable 180 × 360° panoramas to be taken, which are a great way to explore a scene as though one is really there.

Please see the discussion about the Crowd-funding campaign on User talk:The Photographer#Generosity Crowdfunding Campaign and visit the Generosity Crowd-funding Campaign page to consider donating. Even a modest donation will make a difference if many people contribute. Thanks. -- Colin (talk) 13:37, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Please don't use the {{Weak support}} or any other template that the ordinary {{S}} or {{O}} at FPC. The BOT that is counting the votes doesn't recognize these parameters and the nomination may loose one vote. Use the piping instead like this: {{s|Weak support}} or perhaps {{o|Regretful oppose}}, resulting in:  Weak support and  Regretful oppose. I've fixed the 'weak support' vote you recently did so that it is fine now and can be counted. :) Cheers, cart-Talk 19:01, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

VI is the most important contest for wikipedia. But it is also the most subtle because choosing an image in a field of application is often a difficult exercise. We all started in this contest and my debut was very difficult. But I found competitors who had the patient to make me understand the functioning. @Nikhilb239: Thank you for the nomination. I'll do my best to follow its progress. Do you like this station a lot? I've noticed that you nominated David's image of it as well. I am intending to get some high-quality images of the station later in the year. At the moment there is scaffolding out the front. -- Thennicke (talk) 08:33, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Thennicke: I am fascinated by Australia in general and trains and railway stations in particular. I was browsing through various categories of railway stations in New South Wales and yours and David's pics struck me instantly as stand out compositions. So, I have nominated them in FPC. A couple of users suggested a crop for your pic, could you please do something about it? Thanks in advance! --Nikhil (talk) 02:06, 23 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Nikhilb239: This image of mine may not be up the FP standard; It is not centered and I haven't taken great care with the composition (and sharpness is bad). I've done the crop as suggested, but I would be surprised if it passes. However, as I said, I'll be getting back to this station later in the year (possibly as soon as two weeks away) to photograph it again, because it is one of the most beautiful buildings in my hometown. I will let you know when I have uploaded the new images :) And hopefully they have taken the scaffolding away! -- Thennicke (talk) 12:14, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Very nice edit to this image, it feels so much crisper without the haze factor. I would like to ask one thing, however. When you pull an image from a different source than what is listed on the description, please update it so folks will know where that higher resolution version came from. Thanks! Huntster (t @ c) 01:31, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Huntster: Thank you for the compliment - I intend to nominate it at FPC soon. Sorry about not referencing my edit. The image I worked with was File:NASA ED11-0237-18 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.jpg, and it looks to me like both are from the same source? That despite the difference in resolution... confusing -- Thennicke (talk) 06:45, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, two different sources, same image. The image that NASA used in its promotional release was somewhat size optimised to avoid minor blurring, artefacting, etc, while the image you worked on came from the Armstrong Flight Research Center's archive. Huntster (t @ c) 21:06, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Huntster: Oh, now I see - you've already updated the source, which is why I couldn't see a difference in the URL. Thank you so much; I'll make sure to check that stuff in the future -- Thennicke (talk) 00:40, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comment. I did, when I got to the second round of judging, get very surprised that some pictures I knew would never have made it here as QIs, much less FPs, made it to that round.

The organizers did manage to prune out some of the sort of pictures we were going to automatically reject (i.e., pictures of plaques). But we still had a lot of well-intended phonecam pics to contend with. I really think we should have separate divisions, in all our photo contests, for phone and DSLR images. Really, a lot of the best were from people like King of Hearts and Rhododendrites who all contribute regularly at FPC (I could take some great ones myself, but I refrain from submitting since I've been on the jury the last couple of years and like doing it).

I also would like to see more people from FPC, perhaps even from outside the U.S., as judges next year, too. A set of eyes that don't see these things everyday, don't automatically invest value in pictures of the flag flying next to the new World Trade Center building, would be helpful. Daniel Case (talk) 07:32, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Daniel Case: That's a good idea - separate divisions for phones and DSRLs - although some phones are better than old DSLRs these days, so that needs to be accounted for. I'd like to nominate myself for judging at these kinds of events but there's no place to "sign up". Perhaps there should be a page on Commons where FPC/QI reviewers can register that they are interested in helping judge WLM. What do you think? -- Thennicke (talk) 10:23, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I noticed your post on meta:2017 Community Wishlist Survey/Multimedia and Commons/Flexible use of EXIF- and IPTC-data and filenames on Uploads and wanted to let you know that at some point I was looking into whether it would be possible to upload files to Commons from darktable. I had started writing down some notes on User:Jean-Frédéric/darktable, but never dug deeper (also as it did not seem there was much interest from other Commons users).

Jean-Fred (talk) 11:11, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jean-Frédéric: , Hi there!
I generally don't upload more than one or two images at a time, so it doesn't seem to be a hugely important software project for me, but I would probably use it if it existed.
Are you a GNOME linux user? I see you mentioned that libmediawiki is tied to the KDE/QT ecosystem, so I'm just speculating.
At this current moment I'm writing software related to the Magic Lantern Video (MLV) format, but otherwise I'd probably offer to help. It's good to see other free software users on here :)
On a related note, I'm intending to write some commons-based tutorials for darktable in the near future; I'll notify you if and when I get around to it, if you're interested. -- Thennicke (talk) 12:00, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you had already uploaded a file this year, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2022.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that the image Cumulonimbus sunset panorama, Albury NSW Australia.jpg, which was created or uploaded by you, has been nominated for featured picture status; have a look at the nomination page. Thank you and good luck! TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 05:50, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience: Thanks for the nomination! I'll keep an eye on how it goes. I've made an adjustment to the postprocessing and reuploaded it, because my knowledge on that topic is a lot stronger now than it was when I first uploaded this picture. -- Thennicke (talk) 06:56, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Thennicke,

you have removed the FP stuff from your photo File:National Gallery at dusk, Canberra ACT.jpg with the comment “Not an FP; don't know why this was set as such”. But you were too modest ;–) – this is actually a FP on Wikimedia Commons, see the successful 2nd nomination. Therefore I have taken the liberty to restore the FP stuff on the description page (and also combined and highlighted the assessements, as usual today). I hope this is OK for you. Best regards, --Aristeas (talk) 10:55, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for doing that; it's very thoughtful of you. I had forgotten I nominated it twice, and when I clicked on the hyperlink on the FP banner, I saw the old nomination, which is what made me think there had been some kind of error. I'll see if I can edit the FP banner on the image page, so that others are not redirected to the old nom link. Thennicke (talk) 10:19, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I see you've already done it. Thanks so much for fixing up this issue :) Thennicke (talk) 10:20, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome :–). Best, --Aristeas (talk) 13:24, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
