Scongo

Scongo is the greatest villain to ever grace Doctor Who. He is the most perfect written antagonist starring in the older episodes of the show.

Biography[]

Scongo is the secret lover of the villainous Time Lord only known as "The Wibbler". He is also a supposed mirror image of The Doctor, and went on to become his arch-nemesis after several recurring appearances throughout the 1960's in both the show and the TV Comic strips. Scongo is also incredibly intelligent, and uses Hyper Supersonic Bongos against his enemies or for technical purposes.

He is also known for having a variety of bases or secret headquarters. In an encounter with The Third Doctor, Scongo built Scongoland, a theme park that briefly served as his secret headquarters. He subsequently destroyed the park to commit tax fraud as well as attempt to kill his old nemesis, but failed to do both. He has also been responsible for the creation of Las Scongo, a city where he served as Mayor, and conquering Mongolia, which he subsequently renamed Scongolia and made himself king. His best-known base is the Scongosphere, an enormous dome that served as his own personal planet. Scongo was also responsible for the creation of the Scongles, a race of tiny mutant clones of himself that first appeared in 'Birth of the Scongles' and have served as recurring villains throughout the series.

With the revival of 'Doctor Who' in 2005, Scongo would not appear properly until 2013, having been relegated to cameos. He would make more frequent appearances starting in 2015, and is planned to appear in Series 13. The character has also made many appearances in various audio plays by Big Finish Productions since 2000, including his own spin-offs 'Scongo's War' and 'Tales From The Scongosphere'. A series of spin-off books about the character's adventures prior to meeting The Doctor in 'The Wibbler' by Candy Jar Books has been published since 2017. Titan Comics began a monthly Scongo series in 2018, which concluded in early 2020 and was replaced by 'Scongo and The Wibbler', another monthly series featuring the character.

Iconic Moments[]

'The Empire of Scongopolis' - After taking over Earth and renaming it 'Scongopolis' , Scongo reigns supreme, again, and holds all the power in the world. In Part 5, the Doctor and Scongo finally reunite. In this scene, the Doctor warns Scongo to leave the planet, and never return, but Scongo doesn't listen, resulting in the greatest villain being banished into the void, and peace being restored to Earth. However, the iconic moment in this episode is Scongo's final words before entering the void. These words being; 'Everything you think you know, is a lie....

'The Bongos of Scongo' - The whole episode is an 'iconic moment'. Most fans argue it to be the best Scongo story ever made, and if you've seen this story, you'll understand why. If you haven't (fake fan by the way), watch this story now. This is quintessential Scongo.

'The Dessert of Scongo' - The Ambrosia Rice Pudding Heists have been carried out, and it is revealed Scongo is behind these events. The Ambrosia Rice Pudding is being used to fuel the ultimate weapon - new and improved Bongos, which are more powerful than ever before. After an iconic conversation between the Doctor and Scongo, the best villain decides to use the weapon...and the credits roll.

Behind the scenes[]

Scongoumbongo

Scongo with a glass of Um Bongo as seen from the behind the scenes photos of the cancelled Fourth Doctor episode "Um Bongo Um Bongo Scongo Drinks it in de Congo Part 5"

Scongo was created by writer Merrance Naisfield in 1964 after then producer Verity Lambert asked Naisfield to create a villain that was simultaneously "sympathetic, menacing, confusing, and eminently forgettable". Naisfield wrote most of the character's appearances until retiring from writing in 1973. After his subsequent. and still unresolved, disappearance in 1980, Naisfield's estate took over the management of Scongo, and became increasingly uncooperative. Scongo's appearance in Black Orchid was almost his last for five years, as the Naisfield estate refused to allow the character to appear. This notably led to Scongo being cut from The Five Doctors (he played a major role in early drafts, performing much of the role that was eventually given to the Master, and all that remains in the televised version is a passing mention) and Scongo's removal from the Target novelisation of Black Orchid. The dispute was eventually resolved in time for Scongo's reappearance in 'The Son of Scongo'

Scongo was almost replaced by Scongle, after 'Children of Scongo', a 6-part Davison serial which saw Scongo make multiple clones of himself. However, in 1984, 51% voted for Scongo to remain in the show, and for Scongle to be written out. In a recent documentary, Davison says 'Scongle is the best villain, if ever I knew who that was', which is a clever and subtle reference to the final act of 'The Retribution of Scongo', in which The Doctor has all of him memories of Scongle erased by Scongo, so that he can remain as the best villain. However, Scongle would go on to inspire the creation of the Scongles, regarded as fans as the second best villains in the show's history.

It was believed that Scongo has been played by many actors over the years, the supposed best interpretation being by Barry Elliot. However, as Scongo looks the same in all of his appearances it is almost impossible to tell exactly who these actors are. One report claims that the actor was actually in the Witness Protection Program in 1959. And so when he was hired to play Scongo, the actor simply asked to be credited by his character’s name. By the time Scongosphere aired, he was able to leave the program, but couldn’t remember his real name, since he had been referred to as Scongo for twenty or so years. So he simply took that on as his name. No records of his real name or age are believed to exist.

Yes I went through every single Scongo meme I could find to list EVERY named episode that have been made into memes. No I don't have a life.

Trivia[]

  • Scongo is fond of orangutans, and regularly hires them as henchmen
