Our History

Following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, BP committed $500 million over a 10-year period to fund an independent research program designed to study the impact on the environment and public health in the Gulf of Mexico. The program, the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI), administered by the Gulf of Mexico Alliance (GOMA), aimed to improve society’s ability to understand and mitigate the impacts of hydrocarbon pollution and stressors on the marine environment. The master research agreement between BP and GOMA included provisions that all data collected or generated through the agreement must be made available to the public. GRIIDC was established to store and distribute data produced by GoMRI researchers. Although GRIIDC now stores data from multiple programs, a subsite of GoMRI data was developed to showcase the 10-year program's data legacy.
