HBO, ‘Behind The Candelabra’ Lead Creative Arts Emmy Awards; Bob Newhart, Dan Bucatinsky, Melissa Leo, Carrie Preston, Heidi Klum & Tim Gunn, ‘Undercover Boss’, ‘South Park’ & Tony Awards Among Winners

The first 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards were handed out this afternoon at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles. HBO led with 20 Emmys, followed by CBS with 15 and NBC’s with 11. HBO’s Behind the Candelabra was the most awarded program with 8 Emmys. CBS’ Undercover Boss won best reality show, South Park was named best animated show, while Project Runway‘s Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn took best reality hosts. The Guest Actor/Actress categories were the highlight of the ceremony with emotional wins for comedy great Bob Newhart, who snagged his first Emmy for The Big Bang Theory, Dan Bucatinsky (Scandal), Melissa Leo (Louie) and Carrie Preston (The Good Wife). A new 45-second rule imposed on winners’ walk to the stage and acceptance speeches created quite a stir at the ceremony, which still ran for almost 4 hours, clocking in at 3 hr 49 min. A two-hour, edited version will air Saturday, September 21st on FXX.

Diane Haithman, Ray Richmond and Anthony D’Alessandro were on the scene at the Nokia for Deadline: Balmier weather than last year’s 100-degree heat made for a livelier Red Carpet. Matt Weiner, whose Mad Men suffered a historic shutout last year with 17 nominations and no wins, was optimistic heading into the ceremony. “Ya know what, anything would be great,” he said. “I would love to see one of our (guest) actors recognized. Linda (Cardellini), Harry (Hamlin), Robert Morse. None of our actors have been recognized (with wins). We’ve never won an editing or cinematography award.” Asked whether Mad Men would possibly do a Season 8 if the price was right, Weiner said: “No, no, it’s not about the deal. I want to wrap the show up. I have a good vibe for what we’re doing in this last piece and that’s the way to go. Will there be more TV and film in my life? I hope so. I’ve written a play. I don’t expect this (the Emmy sensation) to happen again. That would be greedy.”

Some 88 awards were given away today. To try to get it done in a reasonable time, Creative Arts Emmys producer Spike Jones Jr. appeared onstage before show time to urge winners to keep it short, announcing a 45-seconds limit from the moment the winner’s name is announced. “You have 45 seconds to get from your seat all the way down the aisle, up the steps, and do your acceptance speech. I’m not kidding. Forty-five seconds. We’ve found that you can say a lot in a very short period of time. Everybody in this room will thank you for it.”

2013 Creative Arts Emmy Winners

The never-shy Community showrunner Dan Harmon and star Joel McHale set an outrageous tone at the outset as presenters of the first four awards, channeling infamous Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais. “Tonight we honor all of the people in primetime television who are contractually obligated not to make eye contact with me,” said McHale. Harmon, the combative fired and then reinstated boss of Community, then made a quip about how he’d soon be fired by FXX, the new network telecasting a truncated edition of the ceremony. “We’re going to show those frauds (in TV) that these people (here tonight) are the real celebrities,” he said.

Leo thanked Louie creator/star Louis CK at least five times consecutively, including a final time in Spanish: “Gracias Louie!” “And thank you, Blair,” she added to executive producer M. Blair Breard. “She concluded with a jokey: “Time’s up, isn’t it?”

Backstage, Leo called her guest role in Louie — involving a hilariously raw discussion of oral sex in a car — “scary.” She said she enjoyed trying something “I had not had much opportunity to try — making people laugh.”

The Oscar-winning actress was asked if she was tempted to use any “naughty speech” in her acceptance as she had when she dropped an F-bomb at the Academy Awards. “I will never be tempted to curse in any way that would possibly come across to homes that would not like that kind of language,” she said. “I wouldn’t want to sully their living rooms with the kind of language I don’t mind in mine.”

It was a squeaker as SNL needed a tie to win its first art direction Emmy ever. Backstage, winner Keith Ian Raywood called it “fantastic, unbelievably surprising” that SNL won in the category “for the first time in 38 years. An ebullient Dan Bucatinsky gave the humdrum ceremony a huge burst of energy and emotion when he won for his role on Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal, which is cast by Linda Lowy. He raced onstage in a frenzy, looking utterly shocked, and blurted, “Oh my God! Oh my God! Shonda Rhimes! Linda Lowy! You’ve changed my life!” He also thanked his team at CAA, his kids, his onscreen husband, Jeff Perry, and his real-life one, Don Roos. “How many people get to say onscreen husband and real-life husband?,” Bucatinsky marveled before giving a shoutout to the recent historic vote on gay marriage. “Thank you Supreme Court of the United States!”

Bucatinsky remained as jazzed backstage, calling his win “unbelievable given the level of competition.” He added that while many other actors may say what a family their set is, “in our case (on Scandal) it’s really true. We really are very Kumbaya. My friends are very jealous.” Bucatinsky also expanded on what he’d said onstage about being a gay man with an opportunity finally to marry his partner. “I’m very proud to be a married, out gay man with an adopted child playing a married, out gay man with an adopted child,” her said. “To have all of this happen at he same time when marriage equality became a reality and getting so much attention makes it that much sweeter.”

They’re really winners tonight.” He added that the composer of the play-off music must be raking in a fortune in residuals and joked that even the Venice Beach homeless could not be talked into becoming seat fillers on the program even if “we make a new category for you and let you win — no one will know.”

Given the extremely short time allowed for acceptance speeches, it is no wonder Tomlin had to apologize backstage for having forgotten to mention important people. She said she had meant to accept the award in honor of the late Pat Derby and her partner Ed Stewart, rescuers and protectors of exotic performing animals. And “I wanted to say: ‘It’s time to free the elephants,’” she added.

Following Scandal guest star Bucatinsky’s heartfelt comments on same sex marriage, the openly gay Tomlin was asked for her views. “I’m all for it,” she said, noting that she has been with her partner 42 years. Always the humorist, Tomlin said she’d been asked about gay marriage on a red carpet and had offered a flip response about the “slippery slope” of imitating heterosexuals: “What’s next, monster truck rallies?” Tomlin’s partner, she said, scolded her for not taking the issue seriously. So next time Tomlin was asked the question, she said, “I just spoke very positively about it and it just went viral. So I’m answering you now: We still have not gotten married, but we if we do we won’t be able to sell the pictures to People, it will be a very under-the-radar occasion. God knows we don’t want to even get into the wardrobe thing.”

Appearing backstage with executive producer Jerry Weintraub, Behind the Candelabra actor Scott Bakula said that when it comes to importance for an actor in getting into character, “costume is 80 percent, hair and makeup 20 percent.” Weintraub was asked why he wanted to bring the Liberace story to TV. “I didn’t want to bring it to TV, I wanted to make a film,” Weintraub said. “I knew Liberace personally. I thought he was extraordinary.” It was HBO, Weintraub said, that sought to bring the story to the small screen.

A reporter took note of Weintraub’s embroidered and bejeweled tuxedo slippers, asking if they perhaps came from Liberace’s closet. “No, but they certainly could have,” Weintraub said.

Tears of joy rolled down the cheeks of the iconic Bob Newhart, who finally won an Emmy after seven nominations for his guest stint on CBS’ The Big Bang Theory. Greeted onstage by a standing ovation, an overcome Newhart warned Creative Arts producer Spike Jones he would not comply with the 45-second acceptance rule. “Spike, I’m gonna need a little more time with this,” he said. “This is my seventh shot at this.” Newhart then acknowledged his wife of 50 years, proving “there are long marriages in show business.” He also named his four children and mentioned how he worked for 14 years “at a wonderful place called MTM. And now I’m working at a wonderful place called Big Bang Theory.” He concluded by thanking the show’s cast “who really threw themselves on the sword for me.” Newhart was not drowned out by music; he cut himself off.

Carrie Preston pulled something of an upset in winning the guest actress trophy in her first nomination for her work on The Good Wife as zany but brilliant lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni, and she was as excited as you think she’d be. Starting with the obligatory pair of “Oh my Gods,” Preston — a regular on HBO’s True Blood — thanked Good Wife creators/showrunners Robert and Michelle King along with “all of the writers and directors for entrusting me with this gem of a role” as well as star Julianna Margulies and the cast “for treating me not like a guest but like a part of the family.” Finally, she thanked “my family at True Blood for looking the other way when I had a full-on affair with The Good Wife.”

Backstage Preston said she hoped that her “affair with The Good Wife” would continue in upcoming seasons. After asking “is everybody ready to have a drink?” she said: “I’ve made myself known that I would love to be on that show at any time. Any time that they call me, I will come. I hope they will call me again.”

Preston, who is married to Emmy-winning actor Michael Emerson, said that while Emmy moments are exciting for both she and her husband, “we’re real salt-of-the-earth people. What really keeps us going is the work that we do.”

Neil Patrick Harris, a winner as producer/host of The 66th Annual Tony Awards as well as a presenter, came backstage with Tonys executive producer Ricky Kirshner. When asked what to expect at next weekend’s Primetime Emmys show, Harris took a potshot at this evening’s long-winded presenter Gilbert Gottfried.

The primetime programming awards will feature “a lot of Gilbert Gottfried,” Harris deadpanned. “When we’re long, we’ll have him talk about what just happened.”

On a more serious note, Harris said of his upcoming hosting duties for the Emmys: “We’re past the horribly insecure part. We’ll spend a lot of time this last week waiting for people to say yes, they’ll commit to things.” In the final prep week, he said, ‘we’re kind of seeing things getting and working on different lines and dialogue and dance moves. I’m in the choreographers’ number, so I have to dance.”
