After much criticism, Netflix‘s Cuties debuted on the streaming platform this weekend. The movie follows Amy, an 11-year-old daughter of Senegalese immigrants who is desperate to fit in. As she starts to rebel against her conservative family’s traditions, she becomes fascinated with a group of mean-girl yet free-spirited friends who perform with her at local dance competition.
Directed by Maïmouna Doucouré, the film was initially criticized by right-wing headline readers due to the skimpy outfits and dance moves depicted in Netflix’s marketing, however at the core of it, the film serves as a thoughtful commentary on the way the hypersexualization of women in media affects girls at impressionable ages.

What was Cuties‘ filming location?
Cuties, which is marketed as Mignonnes in French, was filmed in various locations around France. As you watch the film, you may be able to recognize some famous landmarks in some of the shots, but mostly the quaint quiet streets of the highly cultured and celebrated country.
Where is Cuties set?
The film is set in France, where it was filmed. Bein ou Bein Productions, who headed production on the title, revealed that filming took place over an exceptionally quick period of just 3 months. It required thousands of extras and around 60 crew members.
Production came with its challenges, however. “We found Fathia [Youssouf Abdillahi] who plays the lead role on the very last day,” said Doucouré after auditioning over 700 young girls for the part. “A friend of her mother had mentioned the audition but she had forgotten about it and nearly didn’t turn up. It was a sort of fluke we found her at the eleventh hour. I was seriously considering putting the shoot on hold because I hadn’t found the right actress.”
