Abstract
European mountain ash and wild service tree are important species of the genus Sorbus, a member of the family Rosaceae. The genus Sorbus includes about 100 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, which are distributed in the northern hemisphere in Europe, Asia, North America, and in northern Africa. The altitudinal range of Sorbus is from sea level to the upper tree line in mountains. Many species show a considerable ecological adaptability and grow on various soil types and are tolerant of the soil water content and resistant to frost and drought. Some species are grown as ornamentals and fruit trees.
