Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the interrelations among contact lens wear, use of eye make up, eye rubbing, and Meibomian gland dysfunction. Fifty optometry students were evaluated for Meibomian gland function (number of lower lid glands expressing freely with gentle pressure) and fluorescein staining of the cornea and conjunctiva. Subjects were questioned regarding contact lens wear, use of eye cosmetics, and frequency of eye rubbing. No relation was detected among Meibomian gland clogging, contact lens wear, cosmetic use, or eye rubbing in these subjects. The data suggest a relation among clogged glands, contact lens wear, and fluorescein staining. Future studies of older contact lens wearers are warranted.
