Northgate PLC
Northgate PLC is a British based vehicle rental company headquartered in Darlington, County Durham, UK. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a former constituent of the FTSE 250 Index.
Northgate was founded in 1981 when Alan Noble established Noble Self Drive in Darlington. It has a history of acquiring other businesses. Its fleet reached 1,000 vehicles in 1987, 10,000 in 1994 and 50,000 in 2004. It owns a number of companies which provide commercial vehicle services to business under several trading names. Outside the UK its most important market is Spain, where it has a wholly owned subsidiary called Furgonetas de Alquiler SA (FUALSA). As of October 2007 Northgate plc runs in excess of 110,000 vehicles throughout the UK & Spain.
Turnover for the year to 30 April 2005 was £458.2 million. Profits were £54.4 million before tax and £38.4 million after tax.
In 2005 Arriva sold its UK-wide vehicle rental business to Northgate for £96 million.
