It is often regarded as a suburb of Sofia (being inside a district with the same name) and lies in the northern part of the Sofia Valley, with the Iskar Gorge beginning just north of the town.
Novi Iskar was formed through the merging of the villages Aleksandar Voykov, Gnilyane and Kurilo in May 1974, with Aleksandar Voykov being the result of the merging of Kumaritsa and Slavovtsi Districts in 1955.
The Municipality of Novi Iskar and consists of 5 districts: Slavovtsi, Kumaritsa, Kurilo, Izgrev and Gnilyane.
