The College Basketball Invitational (CBI) is a men's college basketball tournament created in 2007 by The Gazelle Group. The inaugural tournament occurred after the conclusion of the 2007–08 men's college basketball regular season. The CBI selects 16 teams that are not selected for the NCAA Tournament or the National Invitation Tournament[1] (NIT). The CBI competes directly with the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) for teams.[2] From 2008 through 2010, teams competed on the home court of the higher seeded team. Seeding was not included in the 2011 tournament and teams had to pay to play home games prior to the finals. The tournament is single elimination, until the final two teams are determined, and then the championship is determined by a best two-out-of-three format.
2008
The 2008 College Basketball Invitational was the first new postseason tournament since the Collegiate Commissioners Association Tournament in 1974. The opening round was played on March 18, 2008, and March 19, 2008, with the second round being played on March 24, 2008. The semifinals took place on March 26, 2008. The championship was a best-of-three series with games being played on March 31, April 2, and April 4, 2008. The bracketing was done in east, west, south and midwest regions.[3]
Tulsa was crowned the champion in the 2008 tournament.
Television
On March 4, 2008, the CBI announced an exclusive television partnership with Fox College Sports to broadcast the inaugural CBI. In addition, in the inaugural year, games were available in local markets on Fox Sports Net and DirecTV.[4] The games could also be viewed on the official website for a fee, which varied depending on the different packages. In 2008, single game cost $6.95, a 24-hour pass cost $9.95, and a full tournament subscription cost $12.95.[5] The 2009 tournament broadcast was changed to HDNet with 4 first round games, 2 quarterfinal games, both semifinal games, and all three championship games being broadcast.
The 2009 Championship's final game was played on April 3, 2009 in El Paso, Texas at the Don Haskins Center between Oregon State and University of Texas at El Paso. The third game was necessary as each team had a home win in the first two games of the series. The game was also telecast on HDTV.
