Alpha acid, the Glossary

Index Alpha acid

Alpha acids (α acids) are a class of chemical compounds primarily of importance to the production of beer.[1]

Bacteriostatic agent

A bacteriostatic agent or bacteriostat, abbreviated Bstatic, is a biological or chemical agent that stops bacteria from reproducing, while not necessarily killing them otherwise.

See Alpha acid and Bacteriostatic agent

Beer

Beer is an alcoholic beverage produced by the brewing and fermentation of starches from cereal grains—most commonly malted barley, although wheat, maize (corn), rice, and oats are also used. Alpha acid and Beer are brewing.

See Alpha acid and Beer

Gram-negative bacteria

Gram-negative bacteria are bacteria that unlike gram-positive bacteria do not retain the crystal violet stain used in the Gram staining method of bacterial differentiation.

See Alpha acid and Gram-negative bacteria

Gram-positive bacteria

In bacteriology, gram-positive bacteria are bacteria that give a positive result in the Gram stain test, which is traditionally used to quickly classify bacteria into two broad categories according to their type of cell wall.

Hops

Hops are the flowers (also called seed cones or strobiles) of the hop plant Humulus lupulus, a member of the Cannabaceae family of flowering plants. Alpha acid and hops are Humulus.

Humulone

Humulone (α-lupulic acid), a vinylogous type of organic acid, is a bitter-tasting chemical compound found in the resin of mature hops (Humulus lupulus). Alpha acid and Humulone are bitter compounds and Humulus.

See Alpha acid and Humulone

India pale ale

India pale ale (IPA) is a hoppy beer style within the broader category of pale ale.

See Alpha acid and India pale ale

Isohumulone

Isohumulones are chemical compounds that contribute to the bitter taste of beer and are in the class of compounds known as iso-alpha acids. Alpha acid and Isohumulone are bitter compounds and Humulus.

See Alpha acid and Isohumulone

Isomer

In chemistry, isomers are molecules or polyatomic ions with identical molecular formula – that is, the same number of atoms of each element – but distinct arrangements of atoms in space.

See Alpha acid and Isomer

Lactic acid bacteria

Lactobacillales are an order of gram-positive, low-GC, acid-tolerant, generally nonsporulating, nonrespiring, either rod-shaped (bacilli) or spherical (cocci) bacteria that share common metabolic and physiological characteristics. These bacteria, usually found in decomposing plants and milk products, produce lactic acid as the major metabolic end product of carbohydrate fermentation, giving them the common name lactic acid bacteria (LAB).

Lager

Lager is a type of beer brewed and conditioned at low temperature.

See Alpha acid and Lager

Solution (chemistry)

In chemistry, a solution is a special type of homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances.

See Alpha acid and Solution (chemistry)

Wort

Wort is the liquid extracted from the mashing process during the brewing of beer or whisky. Alpha acid and Wort are brewing.
