Fellfield, the Glossary

Index Fellfield

A fellfield or fell field comprises the environment of a slope, usually alpine or tundra, where the dynamics of frost (freeze and thaw cycles) and of wind give rise to characteristic plant forms in scree interstices.[1]

Allan A. Schoenherr

Allan A. Schoenherr (February 6, 1937 – May 31, 2021) was a Californian author, ecologist, and naturalist.

See Fellfield and Allan A. Schoenherr

Alpine climate

Alpine climate is the typical climate for elevations above the tree line, where trees fail to grow due to cold. Fellfield and Alpine climate are alpine flora and Montane ecology.

See Fellfield and Alpine climate

Alpine plant

Alpine plants are plants that grow in an alpine climate, which occurs at high elevation and above the tree line. Fellfield and alpine plant are alpine flora and Montane ecology.

See Fellfield and Alpine plant

Alpine tundra

Alpine tundra is a type of natural region or biome that does not contain trees because it is at high elevation, with an associated harsh climate.

See Fellfield and Alpine tundra

Azorella selago

Azorella selago is a species of cushion plant native to the sub-Antarctic islands of the Southern Ocean, including the Crozet Islands, the Possession Islands, the Heard Island and McDonald Islands, the Kerguelen Islands, and the Prince Edward Islands.

See Fellfield and Azorella selago

Biology

Biology is the scientific study of life.

See Fellfield and Biology

Botany

Botany, also called plant science (or plant sciences), plant biology or phytology, is the science of plant life and a branch of biology.

See Fellfield and Botany

Buckwheat

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) or common buckwheat is a flowering plant in the knotweed family Polygonaceae cultivated for its grain-like seeds and as a cover crop.

See Fellfield and Buckwheat

Calyptridium umbellatum

Calyptridium umbellatum, synonym Cistanthe umbellata, is a species of flowering plant in the montia family known by the common name Mount Hood pussypaws or — especially outside the Pacific Northwest — simply pussy-paws.

See Fellfield and Calyptridium umbellatum

Cushion plant

A cushion plant is a compact, low-growing, mat-forming plant that is found in alpine, subalpine, arctic, or subarctic environments around the world.

See Fellfield and Cushion plant

Ecoregion

An ecoregion (ecological region) is an ecologically and geographically defined area that is smaller than a bioregion, which in turn is smaller than a biogeographic realm.

See Fellfield and Ecoregion

Ecosystem

An ecosystem (or ecological system) is a system that environments and their organisms form through their interaction.

See Fellfield and Ecosystem

Feldmark

Feldmark, also spelt fjaeldmark, is a plant community characteristic of sites where plant growth is severely restricted by extremes of cold and exposure to wind, typical of alpine tundra and subantarctic environments. Fellfield and Feldmark are alpine flora and habitats.

See Fellfield and Feldmark

Frost

Frost is a thin layer of ice on a solid surface, which forms from water vapor that deposits onto a freezing surface.

See Fellfield and Frost

Geomorphology

Geomorphology (from Ancient Greek:,, 'earth';,, 'form'; and,, 'study') is the scientific study of the origin and evolution of topographic and bathymetric features generated by physical, chemical or biological processes operating at or near Earth's surface.

See Fellfield and Geomorphology

Habitat

In ecology, habitat refers to the array of resources, physical and biotic factors that are present in an area, such as to support the survival and reproduction of a particular species. Fellfield and habitat are habitats.

See Fellfield and Habitat

Lupinus

Lupinus, commonly known as lupin, lupine, or regionally bluebonnet, is a genus of plants in the legume family Fabaceae.

See Fellfield and Lupinus

Oenothera xylocarpa

Oenothera xylocarpa is a species of flowering plant in the evening primrose family known by the common name woodyfruit evening primrose.

See Fellfield and Oenothera xylocarpa

Perennial

In botany, a perennial plant or simply perennial is a plant that lives more than two years.

See Fellfield and Perennial

A plant community is a collection or association of plant species within a designated geographical unit, which forms a relatively uniform patch, distinguishable from neighboring patches of different vegetation types. Fellfield and plant community are habitats.

See Fellfield and Plant community

Porosity

Porosity or void fraction is a measure of the void (i.e. "empty") spaces in a material, and is a fraction of the volume of voids over the total volume, between 0 and 1, or as a percentage between 0% and 100%.

See Fellfield and Porosity

Scree

Scree is a collection of broken rock fragments at the base of a cliff or other steep rocky mass that has accumulated through periodic rockfall. Fellfield and Scree are Montane ecology.

See Fellfield and Scree

Taproot

A taproot is a large, central, and dominant root from which other roots sprout laterally.

See Fellfield and Taproot

Tundra

In physical geography, tundra is a type of biome where tree growth is hindered by frigid temperatures and short growing seasons.

See Fellfield and Tundra

Wind

Wind is the natural movement of air or other gases relative to a planet's surface.
