Mastoid antrum, the Glossary

Index Mastoid antrum

The mastoid antrum (tympanic antrum, antrum mastoideum, Valsalva's antrum) is an air space in the petrous portion of the temporal bone, communicating posteriorly with the mastoid cells and anteriorly with the epitympanic recess of the middle ear via the aditus to mastoid antrum (entrance to the mastoid antrum).[1]

Aditus to mastoid antrum

The aditus to mastoid antrum (otomastoid foramen) is a large, irregular opening upon the posterior wall of the tympanic cavity by which the mastoid antrum (situated posteriorly) communicates with the epitympanic recess of the tympanic cavity (situated anteriorly). Mastoid antrum and aditus to mastoid antrum are bones of the head and neck and ear.

Epitympanic recess

The epitympanic recess is the portion of the tympanic cavity (of the middle ear) situated superior to the tympanic membrane. The recess lodges the head of malleus, and the body of incus. The mastoid antrum is situated posterior to the recess and opens into the recess at the posterior wall of the recess via the aditus to mastoid antrum. Mastoid antrum and epitympanic recess are Human head and neck, Otology, Otorhinolaryngology and skull.

Facial nerve

The facial nerve, also known as the seventh cranial nerve, cranial nerve VII, or simply CN VII, is a cranial nerve that emerges from the pons of the brainstem, controls the muscles of facial expression, and functions in the conveyance of taste sensations from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. Mastoid antrum and facial nerve are Otorhinolaryngology.

Mastoid cells

The mastoid cells (also called air cells of Lenoir or mastoid cells of Lenoir) are air-filled cavities within the mastoid process of the temporal bone of the cranium. Mastoid antrum and mastoid cells are bones of the head and neck, ear, Human head and neck, Otology, Otorhinolaryngology and skull.

See Mastoid antrum and Mastoid cells

Middle cranial fossa

The middle cranial fossa is formed by the sphenoid bones, and the temporal bones. Mastoid antrum and middle cranial fossa are skull.

Middle ear

The middle ear is the portion of the ear medial to the eardrum, and distal to the oval window of the cochlea (of the inner ear). Mastoid antrum and middle ear are ear, Otology and Otorhinolaryngology.

See Mastoid antrum and Middle ear

Temporal bone

The temporal bones are situated at the sides and base of the skull, and lateral to the temporal lobes of the cerebral cortex. Mastoid antrum and temporal bone are bones of the head and neck, Human head and neck, Otology, Otorhinolaryngology and skull.

See Mastoid antrum and Temporal bone

Tympanic cavity

The tympanic cavity is a small cavity surrounding the bones of the middle ear. Mastoid antrum and tympanic cavity are ear, Human head and neck, Otology and Otorhinolaryngology.
