- Red blood cell disorders
Acanthocyte
Acanthocyte (from the Greek word ἄκανθα acantha, meaning 'thorn'), in biology and medicine, refers to an abnormal form of red blood cell that has a spiked cell membrane, due to thorny projections. Poikilocytosis and Acanthocyte are abnormal clinical and laboratory findings for RBCs.
See Poikilocytosis and Acanthocyte
Anisocytosis
Anisocytosis is a medical term meaning that a patient's red blood cells are of unequal size. Poikilocytosis and Anisocytosis are abnormal clinical and laboratory findings for RBCs.
See Poikilocytosis and Anisocytosis
Blood smear
A blood smear, peripheral blood smear or blood film is a thin layer of blood smeared on a glass microscope slide and then stained in such a way as to allow the various blood cells to be examined microscopically.
See Poikilocytosis and Blood smear
Codocyte
Codocytes, also known as target cells, are red blood cells that have the appearance of a shooting target with a bullseye. Poikilocytosis and Codocyte are abnormal clinical and laboratory findings for RBCs.
See Poikilocytosis and Codocyte
Coeliac disease
Coeliac disease (British English) or celiac disease (American English) is a long-term autoimmune disorder, primarily affecting the small intestine, where individuals develop intolerance to gluten, present in foods such as wheat, rye and barley.
See Poikilocytosis and Coeliac disease
Corneal keratocyte
Corneal keratocytes (corneal fibroblasts) are specialized fibroblasts residing in the stroma.
See Poikilocytosis and Corneal keratocyte
Dacrocyte
A dacrocyte (or dacryocyte) is a type of poikilocyte that is shaped like a teardrop (a "teardrop cell"). Poikilocytosis and dacrocyte are abnormal clinical and laboratory findings for RBCs.
See Poikilocytosis and Dacrocyte
Degmacyte
A degmacyte or bite cell is an abnormally shaped mature red blood cell with one or more semicircular portions removed from the cell margin, known as "bites". Poikilocytosis and degmacyte are abnormal clinical and laboratory findings for RBCs.
See Poikilocytosis and Degmacyte
Echinocyte
Echinocyte (from the Greek word echinos, meaning 'hedgehog' or 'sea urchin'), in human biology and medicine, refers to a form of red blood cell that has an abnormal cell membrane characterized by many small, evenly spaced thorny projections. Poikilocytosis and Echinocyte are abnormal clinical and laboratory findings for RBCs.
See Poikilocytosis and Echinocyte
Elliptocyte
Elliptocytes, also known as ovalocytes or cigar cells, are abnormally shaped red blood cells that appear oval or elongated, from slightly egg-shaped to rod or pencil forms.
See Poikilocytosis and Elliptocyte
Folate
Folate, also known as vitamin B9 and folacin, is one of the B vitamins.
Hereditary elliptocytosis
Hereditary elliptocytosis, also known as ovalocytosis, is an inherited blood disorder in which an abnormally large number of the person's red blood cells are elliptical rather than the typical biconcave disc shape.
See Poikilocytosis and Hereditary elliptocytosis
Hereditary stomatocytosis
Hereditary stomatocytosis describes a number of inherited, mostly autosomal dominant human conditions which affect the red blood cell and create the appearance of a slit-like area of central pallor (stomatocyte) among erythrocytes on peripheral blood smear.
See Poikilocytosis and Hereditary stomatocytosis
Red blood cell
Red blood cells (RBCs), referred to as erythrocytes (with -cyte translated as 'cell' in modern usage) in academia and medical publishing, also known as red cells, erythroid cells, and rarely haematids, are the most common type of blood cell and the vertebrate's principal means of delivering oxygen to the body tissues—via blood flow through the circulatory system.
See Poikilocytosis and Red blood cell
Schistocyte
A schistocyte or schizocyte (from Greek for "divided" and for "hollow" or "cell") is a fragmented part of a red blood cell. Poikilocytosis and schistocyte are abnormal clinical and laboratory findings for RBCs.
See Poikilocytosis and Schistocyte
Sickle cell disease
Sickle cell disease (SCD), also simply called sickle cell, is a group of hemoglobin-related blood disorders typically inherited.
See Poikilocytosis and Sickle cell disease
Spherocytosis
Spherocytosis is the presence of spherocytes in the blood, i.e. erythrocytes (red blood cells) that are sphere-shaped rather than bi-concave disk shaped as normal. Poikilocytosis and Spherocytosis are abnormal clinical and laboratory findings for RBCs and red blood cell disorders.
See Poikilocytosis and Spherocytosis
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin involved in metabolism.
See Poikilocytosis and Vitamin B12
