Ribodon, the Glossary

Index Ribodon

Ribodon is an extinct genus of manatee that lived around South America (Ituzaingó Formation, then described as Entrerriana Formation, Argentina, Solimões Formation, Brazil and Urumaco Formation, Urumaco, Venezuela) during the Tortonian (Mayoan to Huayquerian in the South American land mammal ages).[1]

Argentina

Argentina, officially the Argentine Republic, is a country in the southern half of South America.

Brazil

Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the largest and easternmost country in South America and Latin America.

Florentino Ameghino

Florentino Ameghino (born Giovanni Battista Fiorino Giuseppe Ameghino; September 19, 1853 – August 6, 1911) was an Argentine naturalist, paleontologist, anthropologist and zoologist, whose fossil discoveries on the Argentine Pampas, especially on Patagonia, rank with those made in the western United States during the late 19th century. Ribodon and Florentino Ameghino are taxa named by Florentino Ameghino.

Genus

Genus (genera) is a taxonomic rank above species and below family as used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms as well as viruses.

See Ribodon and Genus

Huayquerian

The Huayquerian (Huayqueriense) age is a period of geologic time (9.0–6.8 Ma) within the Late Miocene epoch of the Neogene, used more specifically within the SALMA classification. Ribodon and Huayquerian are Neogene Argentina.

See Ribodon and Huayquerian

Ituzaingó Formation

The Ituzaingó Formation (Formación Ituzaingó), in older literature also described as Entre Ríos or Entrerriana Formation, is an extensive geological formation of Late Miocene (Tortonian, or Huayquerian in the SALMA classification) age in the Paraná Basin of the Corrientes, Santa Fe and Entre Ríos Provinces in Mesopotamia, northeastern Argentina. Ribodon and Ituzaingó Formation are Huayquerian and Neogene Argentina.

Manatee

Manatees (family Trichechidae, genus Trichechus) are large, fully aquatic, mostly herbivorous marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows.

See Ribodon and Manatee

Mayoan

The Mayoan (Mayoense) age is a period of geologic time from 11.8 to 10 Ma, within the Middle to Late Miocene epoch of the Neogene, used more specifically within the SALMA classification in South America. Ribodon and Mayoan are Neogene Argentina.

See Ribodon and Mayoan

Pebas Formation

The Pebas Formation is a lithostratigraphic unit of Miocene age, found in western Amazonia. Ribodon and Pebas Formation are Chasicoan, Huayquerian, Mayoan and Neogene Brazil.

South America

South America is a continent entirely in the Western Hemisphere and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a considerably smaller portion in the Northern Hemisphere.

South American land mammal age

The South American land mammal ages (SALMA) establish a geologic timescale for prehistoric South American fauna beginning 64.5 Ma during the Paleocene and continuing through to the Late Pleistocene (0.011 Ma).

Tortonian

The Tortonian is in the geologic time scale an age or stage of the late Miocene that spans the time between.

Trichechidae

Trichechidae is a family of sirenians that includes all living manatees and several extinct genera.

Type species

In zoological nomenclature, a type species (species typica) is the species name with which the name of a genus or subgenus is considered to be permanently taxonomically associated, i.e., the species that contains the biological type specimen (or specimens).

Urumaco

Urumaco is a town in Falcón State in Venezuela.

Urumaco Formation

The Urumaco Formation is a formation in Venezuela that includes deposits from the Late Miocene. Ribodon and Urumaco Formation are Chasicoan, Mayoan and Neogene Venezuela.

Venezuela

Venezuela, officially the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, is a country on the northern coast of South America, consisting of a continental landmass and many islands and islets in the Caribbean Sea.
