Sticking coefficient, the Glossary

Index Sticking coefficient

Sticking coefficient is the term used in surface physics to describe the ratio of the number of adsorbate atoms (or molecules) that adsorb, or "stick", to a surface to the total number of atoms that impinge upon that surface during the same period of time.[1]

Adatom

An adatom is an atom that lies on a crystal surface, and can be thought of as the opposite of a surface vacancy. Sticking coefficient and adatom are surface science.

See Sticking coefficient and Adatom

Adsorption

Adsorption is the adhesion of atoms, ions or molecules from a gas, liquid or dissolved solid to a surface. Sticking coefficient and Adsorption are materials science and surface science.

See Sticking coefficient and Adsorption

Atom

Atoms are the basic particles of the chemical elements.

See Sticking coefficient and Atom

Coefficient

In mathematics, a coefficient is a multiplicative factor involved in some term of a polynomial, a series, or an expression.

See Sticking coefficient and Coefficient

Desorption

Desorption is the physical process where adsorbed atoms or molecules are released from a surface into the surrounding vacuum or fluid. Sticking coefficient and Desorption are surface science.

See Sticking coefficient and Desorption

Kinetic energy

In physics, the kinetic energy of an object is the form of energy that it possesses due to its motion.

See Sticking coefficient and Kinetic energy

Molecule

A molecule is a group of two or more atoms held together by attractive forces known as chemical bonds; depending on context, the term may or may not include ions which satisfy this criterion.

See Sticking coefficient and Molecule

Probability

Probability is the branch of mathematics concerning events and numerical descriptions of how likely they are to occur. Sticking coefficient and Probability are Dimensionless numbers.

See Sticking coefficient and Probability

Ratio

In mathematics, a ratio shows how many times one number contains another.

See Sticking coefficient and Ratio

Structure

A structure is an arrangement and organization of interrelated elements in a material object or system, or the object or system so organized.

See Sticking coefficient and Structure

Surface science

Surface science is the study of physical and chemical phenomena that occur at the interface of two phases, including solid–liquid interfaces, solid–gas interfaces, solid–vacuum interfaces, and liquid–gas interfaces.

See Sticking coefficient and Surface science

Temperature

Temperature is a physical quantity that quantitatively expresses the attribute of hotness or coldness.

See Sticking coefficient and Temperature

Time

Time is the continued sequence of existence and events that occurs in an apparently irreversible succession from the past, through the present, and into the future.
