Transactional NTFS, the Glossary

Index Transactional NTFS

Transactional NTFS (abbreviated TxF) is a component introduced in Windows Vista and present in later versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system that brings the concept of atomic transactions to the NTFS file system, allowing Windows application developers to write file-output routines that are guaranteed to either succeed completely or to fail completely.[1]

ACID

In computer science, ACID (atomicity, consistency, isolation, durability) is a set of properties of database transactions intended to guarantee data validity despite errors, power failures, and other mishaps. Transactional NTFS and ACID are transaction processing.

Atomicity (database systems)

In database systems, atomicity (from undividable) is one of the ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) transaction properties. Transactional NTFS and atomicity (database systems) are transaction processing.

Development of Windows Vista

The development of Windows Vista began in May 2001, prior to the release of Microsoft's Windows XP operating system, and continued until November 2006. Transactional NTFS and development of Windows Vista are Windows Vista.

Encrypting File System

The Encrypting File System (EFS) on Microsoft Windows is a feature introduced in version 3.0 of NTFS that provides filesystem-level encryption.

Features new to Windows Vista

Compared with previous versions of Microsoft Windows, features new to Windows Vista are numerous, covering most aspects of the operating system, including additional management features, new aspects of security and safety, new I/O technologies, new networking features, and new technical features. Transactional NTFS and features new to Windows Vista are Windows Vista.

File system

In computing, a file system or filesystem (often abbreviated to FS or fs) governs file organization and access.

Journaling file system

A journaling file system is a file system that keeps track of changes not yet committed to the file system's main part by recording the goal of such changes in a data structure known as a "journal", which is usually a circular log.

Kernel Transaction Manager

Kernel Transaction Manager (KTM) is a component of the Windows operating system kernel in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 that enables applications to use atomic transactions on resources by making them available as kernel objects. Transactional NTFS and kernel Transaction Manager are transaction processing and Windows Vista.

Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator

The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) service is a component of Microsoft Windows that is responsible for coordinating transactions that span multiple resource managers, such as databases, message queues, and file systems. Transactional NTFS and Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator are transaction processing and Windows components.

System Restore

System Restore is a feature in Microsoft Windows that allows the user to revert their computer's state (including system files, installed applications, Windows Registry, and system settings) to that of a previous point in time, which can be used to recover from system malfunctions or other problems. Transactional NTFS and system Restore are Windows components.
