The Rose of Versailles (Japanese: ベルサイユのばら, Hepburn: Berusaiyu no Bara) is a 2025 Japanese animated romance film directed by Ai Yoshimura and written by Tomoko Konparu; the film is based on the manga series of the same title by Riyoko Ikeda. Produced by MAPPA and co-distributed by Toho Next and Avex Pictures, it commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the series. The film stars the voices of Miyuki Sawashiro, Aya Hirano, Toshiyuki Toyonaga and Kazuki Kato. It was released in Japan on January 31, 2025.[2]
It is more faithful to the original manga than the first anime, even if, as in the latter, the main character is Oscar François de Jarjayes and not Marie Antoinette.
In the late 18th century, four people: Oscar François de Jarjayes, a general who is a woman raised as a son, Marie Antoinette, the daughter of Austrian empress that is destined to become queen, André Grandier, Oscar's childhood friend, and Hans Axel von Fersen, a Swedish aristocrat, meet in Versailles, France and live their respective destinies while being tossed by the tides of the era.

In September 2022, a new anime film adaptation of The Rose of Versailles manga series by Riyoko Ikeda was announced to mark its fiftieth anniversary.[8] The film is directed by Ai Yoshimura at MAPPA, Tomoko Konparu in charge of the screenplay, Mariko Oka designing the characters, and Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto composing the music. Miyuki Sawashiro was cast as Oscar, with Aya Hirano, Toshiyuki Toyonaga, and Kazuki Kato cast as Marie Antoinette, André Grandier, and Hans Axel von Fersen, respectively.[9][10][3] Additional voice cast members were announced in October and November 2024, and in January 2025.[4][5][6][7]
The film's theme song is "Versailles" performed by Ayaka.[11]
The film was released in Japan on January 31, 2025.[2]
Richard Eisenbeis of Anime News Network gave the film a B+ rating, and stated "Watching this new adaptation of The Rose of Versailles, it's easy to see why this story captivated audiences five decades ago, and still does even today."[12]
