Derived from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀓𑀟𑁆𑀟𑁆 (*kaḍḍ, “be rough”), attested as Sanskrit कड्डति (kaḍḍati, “is hard or rough”). Cognate with Nepali कडा (kaḍā).

1. hard, difficult

   इस बरस का प्रश्नपत्र बहुत कड़ा है।

2. tough, resilient

   यह कच्चा मांस बहुत कड़ा है।

   yah kaccā māns bahut kaṛā hai.

   This uncooked meat is very tough.

3. stiff, inflexible

   कलफ़ से कपड़े आम तौर पर कड़े हो जाते हैं।

   kalaf se kapṛe ām taur par kaṛe ho jāte ha͠i.
