Originally a pictogram (象形), (definition 2) – the knot at the end of a cord. Later reformulated as a phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *tjuŋ): semantic + phonetic (OC *tuːŋ).

Sino-Tibetan. Cognate with Chepang दोङःसा (doŋʔ‑, to end; to cease), Lai [script needed] (doŋ / doʔŋ, to end) (Schuessler, 2007).

Wang (1982) derives (OC *tuːŋ, “winter”) from this word.
