From Old Norse fœða (“to feed, to give birth”), from Proto-Germanic *fōdijaną, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂-. Cognate to Faroese føða, Swedish föda, Norwegian and Danish føde, English feed, Dutch voeden.
