From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

From frosto (frost) +‎ -a (adjective).

  • IPA(key): [ˈfrosta]
  • Rhymes: -osta
  • Hyphenation: fros‧ta

frosta (accusative singular frostan, plural frostaj, accusative plural frostajn)

  1. frosty
  2. freezing

Borrowed from Sicilian frusta or Italian frusta, both probably from Latin fustis. Sicilian chiefly uses the Arabic borrowing zotta, itself cognate with native Maltese sawt. On the other hand, the Maltese -o- would seem to imply a fairly early borrowing before the phonemicisation of [ʊ].

frosta f (plural frosti)

  1. whip
    Synonym: sawt
