From Old Swedish kræsa (“to provide with food and drink”), related to krås. Possibly cognate with Ancient Greek γράω (gráō, “to gnaw; eat”) and Sanskrit ग्रसति (grasati, “to devour”). Compare Danish kræsen, Icelandic kræsinn.
