luona f
luo + -na. The word uses the archaic locative case, which turned into the essive case. The locative is only in some fossilized expressions, such as this one and kotona.
luona [with genitive and/or possessive form]
- (locative) at ('s place), chez
- Synonym: tykönä
Yövyin Pekan luona.
- I spent the night at Pekka's (place).
Pekka yöpyi minun luonani.
- Pekka spent the night at my place.
- (locative) at, by, near, close to; in front of, outside
- Synonym: tykönä
Tapasimme aseman luona.
- We bumped into each other by/in front of/outside the station.
If the headword is a personal pronoun, luona takes a possessive suffix, and if it is a first-person or second-person pronoun, it can then be dropped (so that only the possessive suffix marks the person).
