Evaluations

This survey of the genetic variability of circulating marburgviruses, the most comprehensive to date, revealed the remarkable finding that the newly emerging Angola isolate was most related to the majority of previous East African strains, in spite of the considerable geographic separation. Despite the fact that the outbreak in Angola (the largest for Marburg hemorrhagic fever on record) persisted for more than a year, there was little genetic variation between 16 fully sequenced isolates. This strikingly high degree of conservation clearly indicated that most likely a single virus species was introduced from an unknown reservoir into the human population and subsequently spread by person-to-person transmission
