Wrys

“I am Wrys, a humble priest. I cannot fight, but this staff I carry can heal your wounded. Take me with you, and you'll be very glad you did.”
—Wrys when being recruited in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon.
Wrys is a playable character from the Archanea Series of Fire Emblem. A curate from Talys, Wrys joins Marth to defend his country from the invasion of the Galder Pirates.
Wrys is one of few characters removed from Mystery of the Emblem, although he is reinstated in the DS remakes.
In New Mystery of the Emblem, Wrys will offer Kris the option to shave their head bald at the end of Chapter 3x, provided that he survives the chapter.
Profile[]
War of Shadows[]
Wrys makes his first appearance in Chapter 1 of Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, where he emerges from his abode in a Talys village to offer his healing abilities to Marth's army. He will then aid Marth in bringing the War of Shadows to an end, thereafter constructing a monastery in Altea to care for children who were orphaned during the war.
War of Heroes[]
Chronologically, Wrys reappears in Prologue IV of New Mystery of the Emblem, where he volunteers to support the 7th Platoon through his healing capabilities. His entrance is one that is unwittingly comical, as he does so while Luke is in the midst of fantasizing over the prospect of a female Cleric joining his platoon's ranks. As Luke is stunned into silence by Wrys' unexpected appearance, Wrys, completely oblivious to his display of lascivious impropriety, mistakenly deduces that he has contracted an illness. In spite of this rather awkward introduction, Wrys will faithfully aid the 7th Platoon until they are recognized as full-fledged knights at the end of Prologue VIII, after which he bids them farewell, departing on a journey.
Wrys' journey takes him into the mountains of Macedon. He is encountered in Chapter 3x of New Mystery of the Emblem, where he is ambushed by a small force of assassins led by Clarisse in the northern mountains of Macedon. Initially resigning himself to his imminent demise, Wrys is eventually rescued by Marth and Kris, who intervene in the nick of time to protect him from being slain. Wrys thereafter repays them by helping them to end the War of Heroes, thereafter living out the remainder of his days in the same monastery that he built, periodically aiding fresh recruits of the Altean army with his healing abilities.
Personality[]
Like a majority of the cast appearing in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Mystery of the Emblem, Wrys suffers from a lack of proper character development, owing to the minor role that he plays in the games. Nevertheless, it is still possible to deduce certain traits that stand out as integral parts of his personality. For one, it can be observed that Wrys is magnanimous, more than willing to provide assistance where possible, a fact that is proven through his readiness to support the 7th Platoon through his healing abilities. This benevolence of his is also explicated through his base conversations with Kris in New Mystery of the Emblem, where he reveals that he has constructed a monastery in Altea following the end of the War of Darkness for the express purpose of sheltering orphaned children.

In Shadow Dragon, Wrys is a bad unit overall. Wrys is useful as a healer for the first chapters of the game. Especially on harder difficulties Wrys will be very helpful in early chapters, where he is one of the only ways to heal units and enemies kill most units in 2 or 3 attacks. However, his staff utility will stop being unique when Lena is automatically recruited at the beginning of Chapter 3. Lena has C rank staves at base and has 8 base magic compared to Wrys' 2 base magic, meaning she can heal more with the Heal staff, heal much more HP using Mend, and use the very useful Warp staff. In his initial role as a Curate Wrys has nothing to make him stronger than other obvious picks like Lena, Wendell, or eventually Boah.
However, Shadow Dragon's reclassing system can allow Wrys to switch out of Curate and become a combat unit. Wrys has personal bases of 1 magic, 4 skill, 2 speed, and 2 luck. Compared to other units Wrys' personal bases are pretty average, but the skill and speed boosts especially will help him should the player choose to make him a combat unit. His personal growths are not very strong either, so do not expect a reclassed Wrys to improve significantly from leveling. His only notable personal growth is 40% in Luck, which will give Wrys a little bit of hit & avoid and make enemies less likely to land criticals on him.
Still, because reclassing in Shadow Dragon gives units the new class base stats, even weak units like Wrys can become OK if reclassed. Wrys is still one of the weakest units in the game due to his poor bases and lack of weapon ranks, but should the player decide to use Wrys it is recommended to reclass him to a Cavalier or Myrmidon. He will still be weak due to his poor base Strength, but once his Sword or Lance rank reaches C he can use effective weapons to target cavalry or armor knights, or the Levin Sword to make use of his base magic. Wrys is still extremely bad as a reclassed unit, but he can promote as soon as he hits level 10 and make some small contributions by using his promoted class sets' better base stats and weapon ranks.

Base Set[]
Wrys is a rather awkward infantry healer as despite his main focus being on healing, he has a rather low Atk meaning that his raw healing is lower than most other healers, even by Book I launch character standards. His main claim to fame is his rather impressive magical bulk scoring 78 in total with 42 HP and 36 Res. His high HP also helps to bring his physical bulk to a workable 64, though 22 Def is nothing to particularly boast about. His Spd is also rather low at 23, meaning a majority of the cast will easily double him, even those of middling Spd. Overall, Wrys is a weird healer with his only notable trait being his resilience to mages and having the second lowest Atk of all units in the entire game.
Slow allows Wrys to inflict a -7 Spd penalty on a foe he attacked and on foes within two spaces of his target. This allows Wrys to support allies by setting up foes for his more capable offensive allies to deal with aggressive threats. Since his Atk is not worth investing into to deal raw damage, giving him the Dazzling Staff refine will guarantee he can safely inflict penalties on his foes
Rehabilitate allows Wrys to heal allies based on 50% of his Atk -10. Unfortunately, this means that he will likely only be able to heal about 7 HP, which is the bare minimum it can heal an ally, or at least 8 HP with a neutral Atk stat and no other changes to his build taken into account. However, if his ally is under 50% HP, he will progressively heal more HP the lower their HP is, thus being his overall strongest form of healing when compared to his other options.
Heavenly Light allows him to heal 10 HP to all other allies when he heals an ally with the skill charged, further increasing a healing capabilities. Live to Serve allows Wrys to recover as much HP as he heals onto an ally, giving him a form of regeneration himself.
Counters[]
Wrys is able to endure most mages attacks with some reliability, but is not fit to take on hyper aggressive mages who are all likely to double attack him. His physical bulk is his biggest sour point defensively where most physical units, even with mediocre Spd can demolish him through a double attack from any unit with at least 28 Spd. Additionally, he is near useless offensively against any unit with even mediocre bulk likely making him one of the least threatening units to bait into attacking.
Skill Inheritance[]
Wrys' kit requires a near overhaul aside from Rehabilitate and Heavenly Light as they are his best overall options in keeping as much healing abilities as he can. With his Atk so low, Fortress Defense or Fortress Defense Resistance gives him mixed bulk increases at the small cost of his already low Atk, giving him more rounded survivability if he is ever caught out. Attack Ploy is the best overall Ploy for him to use to benefit himself the most by reducing the Atk of most foes who are likely to have less Res than him. Wings of Mercy allows Wrys to teleport around the map to wounded allies so he can heal them. Guard slows enemies' special cooldown if looking for a more direct combat Wrys.
Pain is the best generic staff for Wrys to gain if trying to give him even a little bit of direct damaging presence as the 10 HP he deals to his target after combat is not factored by his Atk.

Trivia[]
- Regardless of his class, Wrys retains his bald head during battle.
- One of Wrys' Cipher cards act as a bit of an inside joke, as in Mystery of the Emblem, the village that originally contained him gives Marth a vulnerary instead, which he is carrying in his art.
- Similarly, in Heroes, Wrys' artwork depicts him holding a Stamina Potion.
- Before Darros (who got added much later), Wrys was the only Archanean hero in Heroes whose description stated "Appears in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light" as opposed to "Appears in Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem/New Mystery of the Emblem".
- The generic curates that appear in Fire Emblem Warriors closely resemble Wrys.
