Saphroneth's smaller snippets

Field guide note:

Ylara has been asleep since before the Ruusan Reforms and is about as big a Duinuogwuin as you can get. Before considering her force powers or training, she would probably be able to give Battle Group Executor a fair fight, including the capital ship at the heart of the formation.*

Duinuogwuin get very strong. To all intents and purposes, she is a capital ship.

* this estimate is if anything conservative. A full size Duinuogwuin could fight roughly on par with a Mon Cal Viscount-class star defender AIUI.

It's all fun and games until a giant space dragon starts carving up your Death Star with a similarly large lightsaber.
"I dislike fitting myself into cargo vessels," Ylara replied, turning so she could look over a wing at him. "My wings may carry me into the sky, and even unto space; even without the Force, I can sustain myself there for a long time. So I have a backpack hyperdrive."
Anakin would be madly jealous.

Now I'm picturing Vader seeing her and frantically trying to retune the Death Star superlaser to just make a massive lightsaber beam.

She can actually go hyper by herself, they can do that, but pushing for days on end is a bit tiresome...

Young star dragons have been known to act as living starfighters.

Also, fun note, in one Legends ttrpg adventure Palpy repurposed their burial planet as a storehouse.

Not sure if they know, but a third of the entire species are force sensitive and if they get mad enough at you to overcome their isolationism you're basically facing an entire fleet of jedi starships.

... they can use their gigantic lightsabers to reflect turbolaser shots, can't they?

Thay would be the most hilarious thing ever!

An amusing image to be sure, but how many shots could she block at once? There's a reason so many of the Jedi were killed by massed blaster fire from the clones, or for that matter from battle droids during the war.

Given the size described I think the massive FU Ion Cannon from Hoth would be closer to blaster sized for her.

She'd need a tripod. And a power source. Wasn't that gun powered by the base power plant, rather than an internal battery?
Though I should say that I'm wondering about Morgan Katarn meeting the dragon in question on Ruusan and recruiting her that way.
You did say, actually.
I shudder at the evolutionary pressure that would be required to create such a monstrous nightmare.
What do they eat? What tries to eat them? And how did they fail to dominate the galaxy?

Yes, fools, and not getting along with each other enough for it I think are the answers to that.

Looking at the wiki, it's less that they don't get along with each other and more they seem to be traumatized due to often having to kill off monstrous children resulting from whatever mechanism they use for environmental adaptation being supercharged.

Now I am wondering how a fight between Darth Vader and Duin go,
"Where are my manners," Ylara replied. "I've introduced myself but made no consideration for your situation… should I refer to you as male, female, or one of the less common options? I've met enough humans to guess male, but I want to be sure."
Oh that's a good way of phrasing it.

Ahahaha LOVELY.

Question, where in the timeline does this take place?

Question, where in the timeline does this take place?
It's a few months before Alderaan/Yavin, but less than a year.
It's been a while since I read the Kyle Katarn books, but Kyle is one of the 20 people who stole the Death Star plans and he only joined the Rebellion after his dad died. Shouldn't this be earlier than that?

The Sulon Massacre which prompted this exodus was in 1 BBY. The massacre, trip to Ruusan, discovery of the Valley, return to Sulon and Morgan's death all happened in 1 BBY, as did Kyle's defection and stealing the plans.

Ah, I'd forgotten how quickly everything happened. For some reason I thought Morgan died some time before Kyle joined the stormtroopers.
According To Plan
"These vile Separatists have launched an attack on the Republic!" the Supreme Chancellor said, from the rostral platform in the centre of the Senate. "Their droid armies, bolstered by a force of millions of clones, descend upon our worlds!"

Palpatine turned to the observation pod where Masters Windu and Rancisis were standing. "Masters of the Jedi Order, we have no-one to turn to in our hour of darkest need but you. You must defend us from this attack!"

Mace Windu stood, and the eyes of all the senators were on him.

"In my considered opinion," he said, quietly but forcefully, as his voice was rebroadcast across the senate chamber. "You all done kriffed up."

Palpatine blinked.

"...Master Jedi?" he said. "The Republic is in danger! It is under threat!"

"Then agree to their demands!" Mace replied. "They don't want to conquer the Republic. They want to leave. Let them leave! But I'll tell you this, Chancellor."

He folded his arms. "The Jedi are not part of the Republic. The Jedi have been here for a long time to try and prevent war, but now you've got one. I told you already – Jedi aren't soldiers, and if we were there wouldn't be nearly enough of us to do what you need… ten thousand knighted Jedi and about the same number of trainees, apprentices and padawan won't go far."

"Then what do you suggest?" Palpatine demanded. "You're going to leave the Republic to be conquered?"

"They won't conquer the Republic," Mace replied, implacably. "Or if they do, it's going to be the same as if they hadn't seceded – the government structure might be different, but the population won't be."

Oppo Rancisis gave a little wave, to reassure everyone he was still there.

"The Jedi Order will ensure that, whatever happens, your worlds will not face tyrannical rule from an empire," Mace told the Senate. "In order to do that, it is vital to our survival and our mission that we refuse to take a side in this war."

"To refuse to take a side is to take a side," Palpatine said. "Is this really how the Jedi want to be remembered? As cowards?"

"Excuse me?" Mace asked. "You've got a navy. The planets of the Republic have armies and navies. What we're refusing to do is to fight your war for you."

Palpatine simmered, trying to think of a way to get the Jedi involved in the war.

Perhaps having Dooku steal the Clone Army on top of all the droids from the great industrial concerns hadn't been such a good idea. He wanted a long, grinding conflict that would wear out the Jedi, rather than leaving them in one piece.

(...so it occurred to me that, actually, the Jedi found out about the Clone Army by pure random chance and the Sith put in a lot of effort to prevent that...)

A good planner can account for random chance - engineering outcomes that ensure some kind of victory however things go - but doesn't count on random chance for plan A.

Palpatine is...not a good planner, here. Oops, Obi-Wan opted to chaperone Padme and Anakin instead of tracking down an obscure dart, guess that careful house of cards has fallen down...

All this to say that this was a fun one and Mace was absolutely the right person to give that speech.

That's the thing, I actually looked at the structure of events involved in Obi-Wan tracing down Kamino and there was a lot of unnecessary effort put in by the Sith to conceal that fact. The only clue being an obscure dart is one thing, deleting the information from the Jedi archives means that it's actively trying to hide Kamino from the Jedi even if they had a reason to look.

Thus, the Sith plan for the clones going according to plan - according to the plain facts on screen in Episode 2 - is that the Sith get the clones.

...huh. It's never occurred to me before but you're absolutely right. The chain of events that led to the Jedi retrieving the clones was incredibly unlikely even accounting for Palpatine planting breadcrumbs.

I guess in this timeline the Force decided to push Obi-Wan away from the mystery.

I expected the Explosion. Implosion was a bonus.
But then why the Chips in the heads?
But then why the Chips in the heads?
I said "according to the plain facts on screen in Episode 2". The chips (or indeed the events of Episode 3 without the chips) are in active tension with the events of Episode 2, though could be considered to make sense as insurance in case the Jedi found and used the army the Sith had ordered in their name.
And Mace gets to break just a little more Samuel L Jackson for this one. Nice.
