Get to know TeamSG’s athletes in Rio

Joseph Schooling is a three-time Sportsman of the Year. The swimmer specialises in the butterfly stroke and won a gold at the 2014 Asian Games, a silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the 2015 World Championships - all in the 100m event. Currently an undergraduate at the University of Texas in Austin, he has helped the Texas Longhorns win consecutive national collegiate titles in his first two years there.

Quah Zheng Wen is the reigning Sportsboy of the Year. The 19-year-old was Singapore's most bemedalled athlete at the 2015 SEA Games, winning 12 medals. A versatile swimmer, he is the second Singapore athlete (after Joseph Schooling) to be granted long-term deferment from national service. He won two bronzes at the Dubai World Cup last year.

Former Singapore Swimming Association coaching director John Dempsey once called Quah Ting Wen "the most talented 11-year-old" he had ever seen. Her breakout meet was the 2009 SEA Games where she won five golds. Her career suffered in 2011 when she broke her left forearm while surfing in the US, forcing her to miss the 2012 Olympics. She has since recovered and won four golds at the 2015 SEA Games.

Singapore shooting's poster girl will be competing in her second Olympics, this time qualifying on merit after she earned a place through the Asian qualifiers. She has won gold medals at two Commonwealth Games, and has also won medals at the Asian Games, SEA Games. She also won a bronze at the World Cup in Bangkok this year.

The Commonwealth Games shooting champion came into the sport relatively late, picking it up only when she joined it as a co-curricular activity in junior college. But her talent for the sport meant she was earmarked for the national team soon after. She won a Commonwealth Games gold in 2014 in her pet 10m air pistol event, and a bronze at the Rio de Janeiro leg of the World Cup this year.

Professor Charles Xavier

Justin Liu is a two-time Asian Games champion and former world champion in the double-handed dinghy 420. He partnered Sherman Cheng to win at the 2006 and 2010 Asiad, as well as the 2010 world championships. The National University of Singapore undergraduate had to put on about 20kg in order to be the optimum weight for the multi-hull Nacra 17.

The Laser sailor, a former Laser 4.7 world champion, will be competing at his second straight Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Ranked the world No. 18, he had a creditable debut at the London Olympics, finishing 15th to be the top-placed Asian sailor.

Elizabeth Yin is one of Singapore's most successful sailors, having been crowned the female champion at the 2006 World Byte Championships, and also went on to win the female title at the 2008 Laser 4.7 World Championships. She also won the 2009 Isaf Youth World Championships. This is her second straight Olympics.

Jovina Choo capped her SEA Games debut in 2007 with a silver in the 420. Her breakthrough came eight years later when she bagged two gold medals - in the women's fleet racing keelboat and match racing keelboat.

Amanda Ng tried in vain to qualify for the Olympics in 2012 in windsurfing but a switch to the women's 470 worked wonders. Ng, a SEA Games women's mistral bronze medallist, and partner Jovina Choo edged out two other pairs to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Games.

Khng, a girls' Optimist world champion in 2006, came out of a two-year break in 2012 to begin qualifying for the Olympics. She and partner Sara Tan partly funded their campaign by holding wine auctions and selling cupcakes. A ticket to Rio is reward for the two-time SEA Games gold medallist, who endured heartbreak in 2006 as the only Singapore sailor to return from the Asian Games without a medal.

Her lanky figure makes Sara Tan a natural choice for crew, and has found herself on the winning side of several successful double-handed dinghy partnerships. She was a silver medallist on the 420 with Jovina Choo at the 2007 SEA Games, then a gold medallist on the 470 with Dawn Liu, and also won gold at the SEA Games last year with Griselda Khng on the 49erFX.

Audrey has been the poster girl of Singapore windsurfing, and is widely remembered as a bronze medallist at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, which Singapore hosted in 2010. She came close to qualifying for the Rio Games, and was later awarded an unused quota place.

Wong's crowning achievement came at the 2014 Commonwealth Games when he bagged a silver in the men's singles. He also has one silver and two bronzes from the regional SEA Games. In 2011, he upset former world No. 1 Taufik Hidayat at the World Championships. Wong's father is ex-national shuttler and 1983 SEA Games champion Shoon Keat.

Originally from Jiangsu province in China, Liang Xiaoyu came to Singapore with her family almost a decade ago when her father came to Singapore to work as a badminton coach. She was ranked as high as No. 4 on the world junior rankings and has counted former world champion Ratchanok Intanon among those she has previously defeated. The Rio Games will be her Olympic debut.

A Commonwealth Games doubles champion and singles silver medallist, he led the team to gold medals twice at the Commonwealth Games and has nine golds from the regional SEA Games. At the 2012 Olympics, Gao was part of the team who reached the quarter-finals where they lost to eventual winners China.

Having been a successful 400m hurdler as a schoolboy, Timothee Yap only switched to the 100m and 200m sprints last year. While he did not qualify for last year's SEA Games, he has improved by leaps and bounds this year, clocking a personal best of 10.62 to earn the athletics wildcard to the Rio Olympics.
