Joseph Schooling is a three-time Sportsman of the Year. The swimmer specialises in the butterfly stroke and won a gold at the 2014 Asian Games, a silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the 2015 World Championships - all in the 100m event. Currently an undergraduate at the University of Texas in Austin, he has helped the Texas Longhorns win consecutive national collegiate titles in his first two years there.

Quah Zheng Wen is the reigning Sportsboy of the Year. The 19-year-old was Singapore's most bemedalled athlete at the 2015 SEA Games, winning 12 medals. A versatile swimmer, he is the second Singapore athlete (after Joseph Schooling) to be granted long-term deferment from national service. He won two bronzes at the Dubai World Cup last year.

Former Singapore Swimming Association coaching director John Dempsey once called Quah Ting Wen "the most talented 11-year-old" he had ever seen. Her breakout meet was the 2009 SEA Games where she won five golds. Her career suffered in 2011 when she broke her left forearm while surfing in the US, forcing her to miss the 2012 Olympics. She has since recovered and won four golds at the 2015 SEA Games.

Singapore shooting's poster girl will be competing in her second Olympics, this time qualifying on merit after she earned a place through the Asian qualifiers. The Commonwealth Games shooting champion came into the sport relatively late, picking it up only when she joined it as a co-curricular activity in junior college. But her talent for the sport meant she was earmarked for the national team soon after. She won a Commonwealth Games gold in 2014 in her pet 10m air pistol event, and a bronze at the Rio de Janeiro leg of the World Cup this year.

Justin Liu is a two-time Asian Games champion and former world champion in the double-handed dinghy 420. He partnered Sherman Cheng to win at the 2006 and 2010 Asiad, as well as the 2010 world championships. The National University of Singapore undergraduate had to put on about 20kg in order to be the optimum weight for the multi-hull Nacra 17.

Khng, a girls' Optimist world champion in 2006, came out of a two-year break in 2012 to begin qualifying for the Olympics. She and partner Sara Tan partly funded their campaign by holding wine auctions and selling cupcakes. A ticket to Rio is reward for the two-time SEA Games gold medallist, who endured heartbreak in 2006 as the only Singapore sailor to return from the Asian Games without a medal.

Her lanky figure makes Sara Tan a natural choice for crew, and has found herself on the winning side of several successful double-handed dinghy partnerships. Saiyidah Aisyah shot to prominence at the 2013 SEA Games when she won the 2,000m lightweight single sculls race, Singapore's first rowing gold since 1997. She finished third in the lightweight single sculls 500m race at last year's SEA Games, and booked her Olympics spot by winning the B final at the Fisa Asia and Oceania Continental Olympic Qualification Regatta in April.
