Caryn Pines
Caryn Romanoff Pines[1] is the wife of Filbrick Pines, the mother of Stan, Ford, and Shermie Pines, and the great-grandmother of Mabel and Dipper Pines.
As of 2012, her current status is unknown, but due to the passing of time since Stanley was kicked out of the family, she has probably passed away before the start of the series.
History[]
Early Life[]
In the 1960s, Caryn was married to Filbrick Pines and lived in Glass Shard Beach, New Jersey. She mothered three sons with him: Stanford, Stanley, and Shermie Pines. She also worked as a phone psychic, a vocation greatly aided by her pathological need to lie.
When Stanley held his fake death, Caryn was one of two to attend his funeral. It's open ended if she was somehow involved with the funeral.
Season 2[]
In "A Tale of Two Stans", she was seen working as a phone psychic and meeting with the Pines twins' principal about her sons' futures, during which she expresses concern for their "free spirit", Stanley. She also asked what was happening when Filbrick kicked Stanley out of the house.
Appearance[]

Caryn is a medium tall woman possibly of Russian-Jewish descent. She wears a red, sleeveless dress, white heels, golden bangles on her wrists and large golden hoop earrings. She has long nails, dark red lipstick and purple eye shadow. She wears a large part of her hair up in a partial beehive, leaving the rest of it loose.

Trivia[]
- Her maiden name Romanoff is a Russian surname that can also be spelled Romanov and was most notably borne by the former imperial house of Russia, the House of Romanov. It could possibly be Jewish Belorussian origin as well[2].
- It is strongly implied that Caryn, as well as the rest of the Pines, are Jewish:
- "Pines" is a common Ashkenazic jewish surname. Possibly derived from eastern Ashkenazic, Pinkhes[3].
- At the entrance of her husband's store and family home, Pines Pawn's, was an attached mezuzah.
- There is also the fact that series creator Alex Hirsch (who is also Stan's voice) and his sister Ariel, the inspirations for Dipper and Mabel respectively, are Jewish on their father's side.
