- ️Fri Oct 16 2093
This is the weekly posting of the GLB-TV list. As usual, compliments
to Carol, complaints to me...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, folks! This is note #1 (of 3) of the list of tv shows
with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight
AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 10/16/93-Fri 10/22/93.
Be sure to read notes #2 and #3 also. All times Eastern.
*********************************************************
The following shows air more than once this week:
>> MEDUSA: DARE TO BE TRUTHFUL. Parody of Madonna's "Truth
or Dare" movie. This parody is said to include parody of
the gay content from "Truth or Dare", but I haven't seen
it. Airings include:
- Sat. 10/16/93, 1:00 pm and again at 7:00 pm, MTV
- Sun. 10/17/93, 2:00 pm, MTV
>> PRELUDE TO A KISS. Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan play a
straight couple who meet, fall in love, and get married.
But at the wedding reception, an elderly man kisses Ryan,
and their souls & personalities somehow exchange bodies.
It takes Baldwin a while to realize that he's now living
with and married to a man, albeit one who's living inside a
woman's body. This was an interesting movie. Airs:
- Sat. 10/16/93, 4:30 pm, Cinemax
- Fri. 10/22/93, 2:30 pm, Cinemax
>> LES BROWN: YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE AIDS VIRUS. Check your
local listings for this talk show, which airs on Thursday
10/21. Airings include:
- Thurs. 10/21/93, 10:00 am, Phila. PA ch. 3 (KYW) and New
York City NY ch. 7 (WABC).
The following shows air once this week as far as I know:
>> THE SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF INTELLIGENT LIFE IN THE
UNIVERSE. Airs Sat. 10/16/93, 2:00 pm, Showtime cable.
1991 film version of Lily Tomlin's smash one-woman Broadway
hit, which was penned by Tomlin's long-term partner Jane
Wagner. I've never seen the movie, but Ms. Tomlin played
numerous characters, including lesbians, in the theater
version.
>> BASIC INSTINCT. Airs Sat. 10/16/93, 9:00 pm, Showtime.
Incredibly homophobic movie that contains several lesbians
and bisexual women - all of whom are murderers.
>> JUSTICE FILES. Airs Sat. 10/16/93, 10:00 pm, Discovery
channel. Topic is urban issues, including AIDS.
>> THE RYAN WHITE STORY. Airs Sun. 10/17/93, 4:00 pm,
Lifetime cable. 1989 tv-movie about the teenage
hemophiliac who was barred from school after contracting
AIDS, and who later died of the disease. Ryan White has a
bit part in the movie, as Chad.

Hi, folks! This is note #2 (of 3) of the list of tv shows
with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight
AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 10/16/93-Fri 10/22/93.
Be sure to read notes #1 and #3 also. All times Eastern.
*************** CONTINUED FROM NOTE #1 ******************
>> PROTOCOL. Airs Sun. 10/17/93, 5:00 pm, on national
cable channel 11 (WPIX). 1984 Goldie Hawn comedy about a
cocktail waitress who suddenly finds herself drafted as an
ambassador. Hawn's character shares a house with her two
closest friends - a gay male couple - who are portrayed
positively.
>> FREE YOUR MIND FORUM. Airs Sun. 10/17/93, 7:00 pm, MTV.
TV Guide says: "An open discussion of racial, sexual, and
religious intolerance in America. Topics include gays in
the military; hate music; sexual harassment; freedom of
speech."
>> DESIGNING WOMEN. Airs Sun. 10/17/93, 11:00 pm, Phila.
PA ch. 57 (WGBS). May also air elsewhere in syndicated
reruns. Suzanne's old beauty pageant friend decides that
it's time to have her coming out ball - only her coming out
isn't quite what Suzanne expects. I enjoyed this show.
>> AN EARLY FROST. Airs Mon. 10/18/93, 4:00 pm, Lifetime.
1985 made-for-tv movie about a gay lawyer (Aidan Quinn) who
develops AIDS. Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara play his
parents.
>> ROSEANNE. Airs Mon. 10/18/93, 7:00 pm, on Phila. PA ch.
57 (WGBS). May also air in other syndication areas - check
local listings. Roseanne gets upset when she thinks that
Rodbell's Dept. Store is administering lie detector tests
to find out if her boss Leon (Martin Mull) is gay. They
aren't, but he is. This was a very well done show.
>> SOME LIKE IT HOT. Airs Tues. 10/19/93, 10:00 pm, TNT
cable. Straight male drag comedy.
>> THESE THREE. Airs Wed. 10/20/93, 10:00 am, American
Movie Classics. This is a "straightened out" version of
Lilian Hellman's lesbian-oriented melodramatic/tragic play.
In Hellman's play, a student falsely accuses two teachers
of being a lesbian couple, which sends the local town into
a rage. In this movie version, the kid accuses the women
of a different "vice", because the producers didn't think
the movie-going public was ready for a film about
lesbianism. For a more faithful version, see the movie THE
CHILDREN'S HOUR, from the 1960s.
>> MELROSE PLACE. Airs Wed. 10/20/93, 9:00 pm, FOX. The
TV Guide indicates that the character of Matt is featured
this week. Unknown if his gayness will be discussed.

>> COMMUNITY FORUM: OUT OF THE CLOSET. Airs Thursday
10/21/93, at 8:00 pm, on Phila. PA ch. 35 (WYBE). This
month's show is about "Who's Watching the Town Watch in
Philadelphia's Gay Mecca?"
>> DEFENSE RESTS: TRIBUTE TO RAYMOND BURR. Airs Fri.
10/22/93, 8:00 pm, on most NBC stations, including NYC NY
ch. 4 (WNBC) and Wildwood, NJ ch. 40 (WMGM). (This show is
pre-empted in Phila. PA.) The TV Guide says: "Barbara
Hale hosts this retrospective highlighting special moments
in the life and career of the actor. The program is
scheduled to include clips of the 'Perry Mason' star's TV
and movie performances, as well as a look at his Northern
California ranch and interviews with some of his friends,
family and colleagues."
After Burr died recently, there was a flurry of
reporting about his so-called "secret life." The reports
centered on the issue of whether or not Burr had lived his
life as a closeted gay man. Some publications, such as
People, hinted strongly (without ever coming right out and
saying it) that Burr might have been gay and that Burr's
male "business partner" - a Mr. Benevides, who lived on
Burr's estate for the last 30 years of Burr's life - was
really Burr's lover. Other publications, such as TV Guide,
suggested that these reports were wrong. Unknown if this
tv special will address this issue.
>> CONSENTING ADULT. Airs Fri-Sat, 10/22-23/93, 3:35 am,
on New York City NY ch. 2 (WCBS). 1985 tv-movie based on
Laura Z. Hobson's novel. Marlo Thomas and Martin Sheen
deal with finding out that their son is gay.
**********************************************************
That's it for my tv listing this week. But some folks
have written and asked me to mention the following shows:
>> E.N.G. This is the title of a Canadian show that airs
on Thursdays at 9:00 pm on Toronto's channel 9 and at
Fridays at 8:00 pm on Kitchener's channel 13. It is also
aired across Canada on the CTV network, and may also be
visible to some US cable subscribers and folks who live
along the Canada-US border. Apparently, this show has a
regular character named Mac who is gay and out, and whose
gayness is discussed on the show. (Thanks, Brad!)
>> REAL WORLD II. This is supposed to be an MTV
documentary series about several young adults who live
together in L.A. A report in the GLAAD/SFBA Media News
Briefs said "In the September 10 episode, a new roommate,
Beth, arrives on the scene. Wearing an 'I'm not gay but my
girlfriend is' t-shirt, Beth is definitely an out lesbian.
Future episodes promise to deal with such issues as roomate
homophobia."
