Loran Cehack

This article needs to be cleaned up to conform to a higher standard of quality.

Loran Cehack (ロラン・セアック Roran Seakku?) is a fictional character from ∀ Gundam television series. He is the protagonist.

Personality & Character

He is a very loyal person, believing throughout the series that Queen Dianna would do the right thing. He is also able to adjust to most situations very easily. He was also called Laura throughout the series. On multiple occasions he disguised himself as a female, using the name Laura Rolla.

Though relatively calm, he does get angered at times, such as when Guin manipulated Sochie into piloting his Gundam. He is a strict pacifist and only kills one person by accident throughout the entire series. He can also be quite naïve, being willing to give up his Gundam in order to free some hostages.[1]

Loran used to be a cry-baby when he was younger.[2]

History

Early Days

Loran was born on the moon in an underground village bordering one of moon's artificial seas as the son of Tambooya Cehack, an archeological physicist that spent his days performing digs for spaceships under the lunar surface. It was through this line of work that Loran was taught how to control mobile suits from a very young age as well as inspire the child about the prospect of returning to Earth. As he got older, however, he was sent to live with his uncle as Tambooya felt that it would lead to boy's brighter future. Unfortunately, his extended family passed away not long after, leaving Loran alone.

Determined to follow his dreams to reach Earth, he enrolled into Dianna Counter's return to Earth operation, where he formally met Keith Laijie, the boy he had saved from Charles Gravier's harassment before. Among his peers, he gained some fame as a capable mobile suit pilot and was unknowingly deemed a rival to a fellow return operations teammate Charles Grey. Together, they participated in the Earth Tail endurance race in their Caudata that lead the two of them to be caught in a landslide that took them to the ancient spaceship under Genganam. There, they were able to come into contact with Harry Ord who was fighting boids released by the Arracuda terrorists. Tasked with disabling the ancient vessel's reactor before it can activate the onboard transfer gate, Loran ventured into the depth of the machine and accomplished the task with one last word of advice from his father.[3]

Sometime later, Loran ended with Laijie and the former child star Fran Doll as members selected to be one of several Moonrace making their travel to Earth to serve their apparent role as scouts.

Arrival on Earth

Loran's first arrival to Earth had him almost drowning in a local river. He was quickly saved by Sochie Heim and Kihel Heim, and was hired to work in Dylan Heim's mines. Later he became the family's driver for two years due to his proficiency with machines. During this time, he met Guin Sard Lineford who mistakenly called him Laura. After the two years, he was no longer being considered a foreigner and thus Loran was allowed to participate in the Coming of Age ceremony.

Becoming A Pilot

The night of the Coming of Age ceremony also marked the night of the Moonrace invasion. One of the explosions from the invasion caused a quake that broke a large moustached statue. Inside the statue was the System-∀99 ∀ Gundam. The White Doll then begins to act on it's own with Loran and Sochie in the cockpit. He is then quickly forced into becoming an Inglessa Militia pilot. He acts as the only Militia pilot before the discovery of AMX-109 Kapools. He does all of this under the alias of Laura Rolla. Not long after, Dianna came to Earth, and lengthy peace negations began. Loran was forced to attend a dance. During this event, Loran resumed his alias, "Laura Rolla", wearing a dress to the dance and at one point sharing a dance with Harry Ord.

Traveling With Dianna

Later Kihel Heim and Dianna Soreil switched places leaving every one oblivious to the events and Loran was no exception. Loran began to travel with Dianna following the militia. It is early during this period that Loran first fights Corin Nander, who is the first person to identify the White Doll as a Gundam. Loran does not understand at this point, and is only saved by Dianna's timely intervention. Loran later meets Teteth Halleh and Will Game. During this time, Loran spends much of his time excavating a space ship. Shortly afterwards, Dianna reveals her true identity to Loran, hoping that she would be able to switch back with Kihel with his help. The plan, however, did not work. Soon after the failed switch Loran nearly loses the Gundam to Teteth, who reveals it to be ∀ Gundam. The theft fails, and Teteth is overpowered by Loran. In order to silence her, she is assassinated by Meme Midgard, her ally. Eventually, Harry, who is sent by Kihel, is able to meet up with Loran and retrieve the real Dianna, after a brief fight with Corin.

Traveling to Space

Not long after Dianna left, there was a conflict involving newly excavated nuclear warhead. Some of these warheads went off and caused a massive explosion. Loran is given the two remaining nuclear warheads by Ralpha Zenoa, who entrusts him with their disposal as he does not trust the politicians and military. Not long after Loran, following Earth Forces orders, takes off in the Willgem in an attempt to take the war to the Moonrace directly. However, they have to stop in Manuipich. In Manuipich they fought to free the area of Moonrace which was now under leadership of Phil Ackman. They won and used the Dragons back; which was actually a hidden mass driver to enter space. Harry Ord also joined Loran upon traveling to space.

The Moon

Loran and Sochie head out to rescue Dianna from an abandoned colony. They succeed, but the colony is now about to land on a populated city. Loran uses the chance to blow up the remaining nuclear warheads, firing them at the colony and preventing it from dropping on the city. During this time, he also meets Gym Ghingham and his Turn A Gundam resonates with Gym's Turn X.[4] Afterwards, he heads to the Moon with Sochie and Dianna where he reunites with Hammett And Dona Roroi.[5] The trio also reunite with Miashei and the rest of the Militia.[1]

The Militia is soon attacked by Sweatson Stero and his forces. A conflict ensues and Loran is called out by Gym, who wants to challenge the Turn A with his Turn X. Loran also learns about the dark history and Turn A's role throughout history.[6] He makes his way back to Dianna and the others after fending off his attackers, and is angered when Midgard starts firing near Dianna's winter palace which still contains millions of people in hibernation. This causes him to activate the Turn A's true power and erect a barrier.[7]

After Dianna reconsolidates power, Gym makes an alliance with Guin who tricks Loran into returning on the Willgem before taking off and heading to space. Loran escapes and tries to use his Gundam to push the space back to Earth, but is confronted by Gym who defeats him. Loran detatches his cockpit and flies away, abandoning his Gundam and allowing the enemy to get their hands on it.[8]

After losing the Gundam, Loran uses to Core Fighter in battles. He returns to Earth with the others in pursuit of Gym and Joseph manages to steal the Gundam back, though he refuses to give it to Loran. He takes it into battle but loses to Gym. Loran then reconnects the core fighter with the Gundam and faces Gym.[9] Both mobile suits are badly damaged and Gym is taken out by the power of the mobile suits.[10]

After the battle, Loran bids Sophie goodbye and leaves with Dianna.[10]

Relationships

Dianna Soreil

Loran looks up to her tremendously. His loyalty is aimed at Dianna herself rather than the Moonrace, and he persistently believes in her ability to broker peace between the two armies. He spends the remainder of Dianna's days at her side.

Sochie Heim

Loran looks out for her even after she attacks him for being from the Moonrace. He is very loyal to her and is angered when she is used by Gern to fight Dianna Counter. She likes him romantically and he cares about in turn. He leaves her for Dianna at the end but kisses her goodbye.[10]

Kihel Heim

Loran serves her, but they aren't particularly close. Kihel is strict with Loran but he looks out for her regardless. When Dianna tears her dress to treat him while dressed as Kihel, he is surprised at seeing 'Kihel' being so kind to him.

Keith Lajie

The pair are friends. Loren looks out for Keith, encouraging him on his journey to become a baker. Likewise, Keith looks out for Loran and advises him not to stand out too much, lest his identity as a Moonrace is revealed.

Trivia

  • Loran Cehack has only 2 direct kill count (first in episode 39, second in episode 46), least kill count in entire Gundam Protagonist.
  • It is often rumored among fans that Loran was originally intended to be female but this can be discredited due to the early concept art images.
  • By completing all of Loran's Story Missions in Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 and reading the terminal message Dianna sends, the player unlocks an alternate costume which presents Loran in a decorative emerald dress with makeup. This is a reference to his alias "Laura Rolla" in the anime.
  • Up until the first officially subtitled release of ∀ Gundam, there had been massive discussions as to if Loran's name was actually "Rolan" instead. Bandai uses "Rolan" instead of "Loran" in all of the official releases and publications except for the official subtitled ∀ Gundam.
  • In episode 46 Loran gives his autograph to a pair of sisters, where he spells his name as "Rolan Cehack".
  • In the ∀ Gundam II: Moonlight Butterfly compilation film, Loran's dialogue is changed; instead of fighting with a sword "only once before", he instead "has never" fought with a sword.
    • This is likely due to the film's absence of Loran's sword fight against Quoatl.
  • To obtain the "Laura Rolla" variant of the Loran AI Pilot in Gundam Breaker Mobile, players must build it from event blueprints during a limited time when it is available as a build project. This is a resource-intensive process, as each part requires a combination of twelve total Material which can only be obtained by rolling the current gacha capsules on specific weeks to get the number of necessary material for the part. it would take at least twelve rolls over four weeks to craft the AI.
  • The series itself (TV Series) never clarifies Sochie as Loran's love interest, but they did share a genuine kiss. - however, Tomino clarifies in his memoir "Turn A no Iyashi" that Dianna is the one he loves. In the manga adaptation, it's heavy implied that Sochie and Loran love each other and Queen Dianna still hasn't overcome her first love.
