Ravine

A deep, narrow ravine in the Hogwarts grounds divided the castle into two sections. The Covered Bridge, Viaduct, Stone Bridge and Suspension Bridges spanned this gorge.

History[]

In the 19th century, the ravine contained water. In the 1890–1891 school year, the water was still visible.[1] By the late 20th century, the water seemingly had begun to dry up, and by the 1990s, it appeared to have disappeared completely.[2]

In 1990, during the final battle between R and the Circle of Khanna, Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde's Fiendfyre attacked Peregrine, the leader of R, and pushed him off the Viaduct into the ravine, without a wand. His fate was unknown.[3]

In November 1994, the ravine was shrouded in a thin mist, particularly around the Viaduct, where the fog was most concentrated.[4] By May 1998, however, the mist had disappeared entirely, leaving the ravine looking deep and ominously dark, with its bottom unseeable.[2]

During the Battle of Hogwarts, as Lord Voldemort led the Death Eaters and their allies from the Forbidden Forest towards the castle wrongly believing he had successfully killed Harry Potter, a dead giant lay in his path on the Viaduct. With a wave, Voldemort magically pushed the body off the bridge into the ravine below.[2]
