Screenwriter Zak Penn has revealed that the upcoming The Matrix sequel starring Keanu Reeves isn’t the only film in the franchise that is being developed.

Taking to Twitter, Zak Penn confirmed that his The Matrix project set up at Warner Bros. is not the film starring Keanu Reeves and being directed by Lana Wachowski. He also confirmed that neither his nor the Keanu Reeves-starring films are reboots of the original The Matrix.

You can check out the tweet below.

people keep asking, so let me clarify there are two different #Matrix projects at wb. i wrote one set earlier in the timeline of the matrix universe. Lana Wachowski is directing a sequel that i did not work on, but cant wait to see. Neither of them are reboots. #notareboot

Plot details on Zak Penn’s Matrix script are pretty much nonexistent apart from the tidbits he shared with his followers on Twitter However, the screenwriter did reveal that his script is set earlier in the timeline of The Matrix universe, which further confirms that the upcoming Keanu Reeves film is indeed a sequel.

Seeing as Zak Penn’s Matrix film isn’t a mainline sequel to the three Matrix films starring Keanu Reeves, one can imagine that his film is currently on the backburner. If the fourth Matrix film is a success, perhaps we’ll be seeing Penn’s script come to life. Penn is quite the prolific writer, having written scripts for Ready Player One and X-Men: The Last Stand.

Lana Wachowski is directing The Matrix 4 from a script she co-wrote with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchel. The film is set to star Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. The Matrix 4 is reportedly eyeing an early 2020 production start with Lana Wachowski also serving as a producer alongside Grant Hill.
