We are delighted to announce the shortlist for the 2025 IASC Medal, awarded in recognition of exceptional and sustained contributions to the understanding of the Arctic.
The shortlisted candidates are as follows:
- Donald K. Perovich for outstanding long-lasting achievements in improving knowledge of the albedo effect and its impact and through his outstanding communication and mentoring efforts ensuring the spread of this knowledge all the way from classrooms to governments around the world and for his dedication to coordination of complex international field campaigns.
- Gareth Rees for outstanding achievements in educating a generation of researcher with his seminal book on remote sensing of the Arctic, his impressive dedication to outreach activities and exploration of different ways to work with the Arctic and its people.
- Vladimir Romanovsky for outstanding achievements and exceptional research outputs on permafrost, maintenance of vital long time series that document its change, his international contributions via IASC and other international bodies on policy-related issues and his legacy of collaboration across nations.
IASC would like to thank the 2025 IASC Medal Committee, who reviewed the nominations: Mark Inall (Chair), Guðrún Nína Petersen, Robbie Mallett, Annette Scheepstra, and Xiaofan Yang.
The winner of the 2025 IASC Medal is expected to be announced at the end of February. The IASC Medal recipient is expected to deliver an award lecture and be presented with the Medal at the Arctic Science Summit Week 2025.
